Can I tell you something I LOVE about Maui family pictures during pregnancy? The baby who isn’t technically in the family photo yet somehow becomes part of every single one. They’re there when your toddler puts both hands on your belly because “gentle” is apparently open to interpretation. They’re there when your partner pulls you close. They’re there while your kids run circles around you on the beach and you’re standing there thinking about how very soon, all of this is going to look a little different.
That’s why I don’t think you necessarily have to choose between booking maternity portraits and updating your family photos. We can celebrate both. A maternity and family session gives you space to document you and this pregnancy while also photographing the family that’s waiting to meet this little person. We’ll make time for beautiful maternity portraits, photos with your partner, individual moments with your kids, and plenty of photographs of everyone together.
And because we’re in Maui, we can do all of that barefoot on the beach while the kids play, the sun goes down, and nobody has to spend an hour standing perfectly still and smiling at me.
Honestly? That sounds like a WAY better plan.

Pregnancy is obviously about the baby you’re waiting for, but it’s also about the family that’s changing around them. Maybe you’re becoming parents for the first time or your oldest is about to become a big sibling and has VERY strong opinions about what the baby should be named. Maybe this is your third baby, and you’re trying to understand how the tiny newborn clothes somehow came back out of storage already.
Whatever your family looks like, you’re in this weird, wonderful little in-between season. Your baby isn’t here yet, but life is already shifting to make room for them. That’s what makes combining maternity portraits with Maui family pictures so special.

Instead of your maternity photos focusing exclusively on your pregnancy, we can tell a bigger story. Your belly deserves its moment, absolutely. But so does your toddler holding your hand. Your partner deserves photos loving on you. Your kids deserve photographs with you before everyone gets promoted to their new roles.
Years from now, your bunch get to see something pretty incredible: what your family looked like while you were waiting for them.

And this is exactly what I want your photos to hold onto: not just what everyone looked like, but what this season actually felt like. You can get to know me a little better here and see why making space for the real, messy, sweet stuff happening between the pretty photos matters so much to me.
I think sometimes people hear “maternity session” and picture an entire gallery of one person standing beautifully in a dress with their hands on their belly. And while we’ll absolutely make space for those beautiful Maui maternity photos, that doesn’t have to be the whole session.

That’s the beauty of combining the two: we don’t have to treat half the session like “maternity photos” and the other half like “family photos.” We can move naturally between the two, giving you space for the beautiful bump photos you want while still leaving plenty of room for whatever your family does when everyone is together.
Your session becomes this little snapshot of your family right in the middle of becoming something new. And spending part of your pregnancy in Maui? Even better. You’re already somewhere beautiful with your favorite people, probably trying to soak up every second before you head home and life gets approximately 700 times busier with a newborn. So instead of waiting for the “right” time later, we get to photograph this version of your family while you’re actually in it: the belly, the big-sibling excitement, the way your family fits together right now, and all.

Here is where the beach earns major bonus points. Kids have things to do. They can run and dig their toes into the sand. They can chase waves, look for shells, climb onto Dad, race each other down the shoreline, snuggle with Mom for approximately four seconds before deciding they have somewhere VERY important to be.
And I can photograph all of it. For family photos on the beach, I don’t need your kiddos to behave like tiny professional models. In fact, please don’t spend the entire session reminding them to look at me and smile.

I’d much rather give your family room to just be. We’ll absolutely get the everyone-looking-at-the-camera photograph because grandparents everywhere would riot if we didn’t. But then we can move on. That’s where beach family photos become less about getting your kids to cooperate and more about giving your family an evening to enjoy together.
Your toddler decides collecting approximately 47 rocks is suddenly the most important task of their life? We can work with that too. Those little quirks are part of who they are right now, and honestly, they’re exactly the kind of things I want you to remember.

Combining sessions doesn’t mean your maternity portraits get squeezed into the last five minutes while everyone else waits. I want you to have photographs that celebrate you, too. We’ll intentionally carve out time for solo maternity portraits and slow things down a little. Depending on what feels comfortable, we can photograph movement in your dress, your silhouette against the sunset, quiet portraits near the water, or something playful and less traditional.
I love the contrast this creates in a gallery: one photograph of you alone, looking absolutely incredible with the Maui coastline behind you, followed by your kid launching themselves into your arms.

Both are this season. Both deserve to exist.
There is a reason I love photographing families around sunset, and yes, the light is a BIG part of it. Maui knows how to show off. As the sun gets lower, the light softens, the colors change, and we can get that warm, glowy look people imagine when they think about Hawaii family photos.

But sunset gives us more than pretty light. It lets the session change right along with the evening. We can start while there’s still plenty of light to explore the beach, then everything gets softer and warmer as the sun drops. When conditions cooperate, we might finish near the water with sandy feet while Maui casually shows off behind you.
The goal isn’t to manufacture a perfect Maui sunset moment. It’s to let your family have a really good evening together while I pay attention to the light, wind, beach conditions, and all those little moments happening between you.

Want to see what that actually looks like? Take a peek through my Maui family photography gallery to see the sandy feet, belly laughs, snuggles, tiny personalities, and all the beautifully unplanned moments that make family photos feel like your family.
You do not need to dress your entire family in identical white shirts and khaki pants. Maui has seen enough. For a maternity and family session, I recommend starting with the outfit you feel best in and building everyone else’s clothing around it. You’re the one carrying the baby, so you get first dibs.

For maternity portraits, dresses with a little movement photograph beautifully on the beach. Lightweight fabrics catch the breeze, longer skirts look gorgeous when you walk, and something fitted can be equally beautiful if you’d rather really highlight your bump.
But the most important question is: do you feel like yourself in it? From there, coordinate your family without making everyone match. Think complementary colors, different textures, and clothing your kids can move in. An outfit your kid can’t sit, run, or be picked up in without you worrying about it the entire time? Probably not the one.

Remember: we’re going to the beach. There will probably be sand involved. Plan accordingly.
For maternity portraits, we want that sweet spot where your bump is bumping but you’re still comfortable enough to walk the beach and actually enjoy yourself. And because every pregnancy is different, I’m not going to pretend there’s one magical week on the calendar when everyone suddenly needs to take maternity photos.

Coming to Maui during your pregnancy? Send me your travel dates early so we can start planning around where you’ll be in your pregnancy, who’s joining us, and what you’re envisioning for your photos. From there, we’ll figure out timing that works for your kids and the kind of evening you’re hoping for.
You do not need to spend your vacation researching Maui tides and calculating sunset angles. I have you.

The best places in Maui for family pictures aren’t necessarily whichever beach currently has the most saves on Instagram. How old are your kids? How much walking feels realistic while you’re pregnant? Are grandparents coming? Do we need easy access? Are you picturing a wide sandy beach, greenery, dramatic coastline, or somewhere the kids have plenty of room to play?
Crowds, wind, sunset direction, seasonal conditions, accessibility, and ocean conditions matter too. That’s why I help my families choose locations instead of handing you a giant list and saying, “Good luck!”

You can absolutely bring me inspiration, especially if you’ve been saving Hawaii family picture ideas and have a certain look in mind. But we’ll use those photographs to understand what you’re drawn to rather than trying to recreate someone else’s session.
Your location should work for the people coming with us. Especially the pregnant one.

Here’s something I think gets overlooked when we’re talking about maternity photos: your older kids are in the middle of this too. They’re about to become a big brother or sister, and even if they don’t fully understand how much life is about to change, this is part of their story too.
So let them touch your belly. Let them talk to the baby, run away, come back, and make this whole thing a little less serious than maternity photos sometimes get to be.

We don’t need every photograph to scream MATERNITY SESSION.
Sometimes the most meaningful photograph might be your child curled against you with your belly barely visible. Or everyone walking down the beach together. Or your partner looking at the kids while you’re laughing at whatever chaos they’re currently creating. Those photographs celebrate the baby on the way by showing the family they’re coming home to.
And I think that’s pretty freaking special.

Absolutely. That’s the whole beauty of it. We’ll make room for maternity portraits, your whole family together, and all the different relationships in between so you don’t have to choose one or the other.

Kids not cooperating perfectly? Sounds like a family photo session to me.
I don’t expect kids to perform for my camera for an entire session. We’ll move, play, take breaks when needed, and work with their personalities rather than spending the evening fighting against them. Sometimes the “uncooperative” moments become the photographs parents love most.

Sunset can be wonderful if your family loves the idea of playing on the beach as the light changes, while sunrise can mean cooler temperatures, softer conditions, and fewer crowds. If sunset falls directly during your toddler’s regularly scheduled emotional collapse, however, pretty light isn’t going to save us. We’ll choose what works for your family.
Absolutely. Bringing grandparents or the whole crew along? Tell me when you inquire so we can plan enough time and choose a location that works for everyone.
And if Grandma is already counting down the days until this baby arrives, having her in a few photographs might end up meaning even more later.

Keep it simple. Water, anything your kids genuinely need, and perhaps a towel or change of clothes if we’re planning to get near the water. You don’t need an entire carload of props to make your session interesting.
Your family is already enough.
For a little while longer, your family looks exactly like this. Your oldest is still the youngest. The baby is still the little bump everyone reaches for. And I think there’s something really beautiful about realizing this version matters too.

Your maternity portraits get to celebrate the little person you’re waiting to meet, while your Maui family pictures hold onto everyone who’s already here, exactly as you are in this weird, wonderful in-between.
That’s your family right now.
