Growing a tiny human is already a full-time job, so the thought of taking beach maternity photos in the middle of the afternoon might sound kind of exhausting. 😂 I TOTALLY get it, but trust me, you’ll be so glad you did. If you’re wondering whether sunrise is really worth the early alarm, you’re definitely not the first. Honestly, short answer? Absolutely.Â
Not because I enjoy making sleepy parents wake up before the sun (I promise I don’t), but because sunrise creates an experience that’s calmer, cooler, and so much more comfortable, especially during pregnancy.
The beaches are quieter, the morning feels calmer, and the soft light wraps everything in this dreamy glow that somehow makes Maui look even more incredible than it already is. Instead of sharing the beach with crowds of people, you’ll mostly find locals walking their dogs, surfers heading into the water, and the occasional early-morning runner who smiles as they pass by.

It’s peaceful, and that’s exactly how I think beach maternity photos should feel. Because these photos aren’t just about documenting your growing bump. They’re about slowing down together before life gets crazy chaotic, soaking in one last season as a family of two (or three!), and creating memories you’ll look back on long after your little one arrives.
If you’re wondering whether sunrise is the right choice for your Maui maternity photos, here’s why I recommend it to almost every expecting family.
I will ALWAYS recommend sunrise, but not just because of the actual photos. It’s about you. Pregnancy is already asking a lot of your body. The last thing I want is for you to spend your session feeling overheated, self-conscious, or like you’re sharing the beach with hundreds of other people.
Sunrise naturally takes so much of that pressure away.

One of the biggest perks of sunrise is how much quieter the beaches usually are. That doesn’t mean you’ll have every beach completely to yourselves. (Maui is still Maui. 😂) But instead of weaving around towels, umbrellas, and families setting up for the day, you’ll usually have plenty of space to walk together, laugh together, and simply enjoy being there.
You’re not worrying about who’s watching or waiting for crowds to clear. You’re just existing together. That feeling shows up in every single photo.

I think that’s why so many moms end up telling me the session felt less like taking photos and more like spending a quiet morning together before life changes in the very best way. It never feels like you have the island to yourselves. It just feels like everyone who is there is quietly sharing the morning together.
There’s this little window of time where the island hasn’t fully come to life yet, and getting to experience that alongside your growing family feels incredibly special. It almost feels like Maui is letting you in on a secret before everyone else wakes up.
I’ve never had a mama finish a sunrise session and say, “You know what? I wish we’d done this in the middle of the afternoon.” Instead, it’s usually something like, “That was SO much easier than I expected.” Because it is. The mornings just feel easier.

By the time most people are heading out for breakfast, we’re usually wrapping up our session. You’re heading off to enjoy the rest of your day while everyone else is just starting theirs. Grabbing breakfast afterward has become part of the tradition for so many of my couples. There’s something really sweet about sitting down for pancakes or coffee together while you’re still talking about the sunrise you just watched.
I also find that expecting moms have so much more energy in the morning. You’re usually feeling fresher, you’re not trying to squeeze your session in after a full day of exploring the island, and your body hasn’t spent hours in the Hawaiian sun. It makes such a difference, not just physically, but emotionally too.

Because when you’re comfortable, you’re present. You’re laughing with your partner instead of thinking about how much your back hurts. You’re walking barefoot along the shoreline because it feels good, not because I asked you to. You have the space to simply enjoy this season instead of counting down the minutes until we’re done.
That’s exactly what I want for every mama who steps in front of my camera. I want you to leave thinking, “That was so much fun.” Not, “I’m so glad that’s over.”
Pregnancy has a funny way of making you feel completely amazed by your body and totally unfamiliar with it at the same time. That’s why one of the first things I hear from expecting moms is: “I just don’t feel like myself right now.”
That makes TOTAL sense. Pregnancy is beautiful, but it can also feel unfamiliar. Your body is changing every single week, your favorite jeans gave up on you months ago, and some days you feel like an absolute goddess while other days you’re just trying to find a comfortable way to tie your shoes.

That’s exactly why I love photographing beach maternity photos at sunrise. The soft morning light is incredibly forgiving. It wraps around you instead of shining directly down on you, which means softer skin tones, dreamy ocean colors, and photos that feel light, airy, and natural.
More importantly, it lets you shine. You’re not squinting into harsh sunlight or feeling like the bright afternoon sun is highlighting every little thing you’re suddenly self-conscious about. Instead, everything feels softer. More relaxed. More like the way you’ll want to remember this season years from now.
Can I tell you something I’ve noticed? Almost every mom starts the session a little hesitant. She’s adjusting her dress. Wondering what to do with her hands. Laughing because she feels awkward. Then somewhere along the way, she forgets about the camera.

She’s talking with her partner. Rubbing her belly without even thinking about it. Smiling because the baby just kicked. Watching the waves roll in while she takes a deep breath.
Looking back, those are almost always the photos families treasure most. Not because the light was perfect. Because she finally stopped worrying about how she looked and started enjoying where she was. That’s the kind of beauty I hope every mom sees when she looks back at her photos.
If you’ve never been awake for sunrise in Maui before, you’re probably picturing us showing up in complete darkness and somehow taking photos before you can even see each other. Thankfully, that’s not how it works here.
A sunrise session isn’t one single moment. It’s more like watching the island slowly warm up around you. Every few minutes, something changes. The colors shift. The light softens. Before you know it, the beach looks completely different than it did when you first arrived.
I always smile more when I’m photographing mornings here.

This might surprise you, but some of the best stuff happens before the sun ever peeks over the horizon. The sky usually starts changing long before sunrise. Deep blues turn into soft lavender, pale pink, warm peach, and sometimes even the brightest shades of orange you’ve ever seen. Sometimes it all happens so quickly you’ll look away for thirty seconds and swear the sky changed while you weren’t paying attention. Every morning is a little different, which means no two galleries ever look exactly alike.
And because the sun is still below the horizon, everything feels incredibly soft. The colors are gentle, the light is even, and the whole beach has this gentle, almost dreamy feeling that photographs so beautifully.
It’s quiet. Not empty. Just still.

Then, almost without you noticing, everything starts to open up. The ocean catches the light first, then the mountains start glowing behind you. Finally, the sky shifts one more time, and suddenly the whole beach feels bright and full of life.
This is usually the point where everyone forgets they woke up early. The morning air is still cool, you’ve had time to settle into the session, and everything starts feeling easy. You’re walking along the shoreline, laughing with your family, and soaking in the kind of morning that makes you want to stay just a little longer. Truthfully, we usually do.
Because there’s never a reason to rush the prettiest part of the day.
Let’s get one thing out of the way first. There isn’t one “perfect” outfit for beach maternity photos. The best outfit is always the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. If you’re tugging at a dress all morning or wondering if you should’ve picked something else, it’s going to be really hard to relax and enjoy the experience.

That said, there are a few things that photograph especially well on Maui’s beaches.
If you’ve ever looked at a maternity gallery and wondered why everything feels so effortless, there’s a good chance the dress had something to do with it.
Flowy fabrics catch the ocean breeze in the prettiest way. They add movement without you having to think about it, which makes your photos feel natural instead of overly posed.
Plus, they’re usually way more comfortable than anything tight or structured. During pregnancy, comfort wins every single time. If you’re deciding between two dresses, I’d almost always choose the one you could happily wear for an hour while walking barefoot on the beach.
That’s usually the right answer.
Maui never asks you to compete with it. The scenery is already doing plenty, so your outfit doesn’t have to. The blue ocean, green mountains, and golden sand. You don’t have to compete with any of it.

Soft neutrals like cream, ivory, beige, sage, dusty blue, muted terracotta, or soft blush photograph beautifully against the landscape without taking attention away from what matters most: you.
That doesn’t mean you have to avoid color completely. If wearing something bold feels the most like you, wear it! My biggest recommendation is simply choosing tones that feel timeless so your photos still feel like you years from now.
Still trying to decide what to wear? I put together an entire guide on what to wear for Maui family photos, and the same tips work beautifully for maternity sessions. It covers outfit ideas, color palettes, and how to choose pieces that feel comfortable, photograph beautifully, and still feel like you.
Here’s some good news. There’s a very good chance you’ll spend most of your session barefoot. The sand feels amazing under your feet, it photographs beautifully, and let’s be honest, walking through soft beach sand in heels doesn’t exactly scream “relaxing.”
If you’d like to wear shoes while walking to our location, absolutely bring them. We can always kick them off once we get started. Bare feet just feel right here.

Please don’t stress about finding the “perfect” outfit. I’ve photographed moms in flowing maternity gowns, simple linen dresses, oversized sweaters, and even a favorite button-down borrowed from their partner.
What made every single one of those sessions beautiful wasn’t the dress. It was the way they looked at the little life they were about to meet.
That’s always what people notice first.
Most moms show up convinced they’re going to be tired. And that’s fair. Setting an alarm before sunrise while you’re pregnant doesn’t exactly sound like anyone’s idea of a relaxing vacation activity. But something funny happens once we get to the beach.
Within the first five minutes, nobody’s talking about how early it is anymore. They’re talking about how beautiful the sky looks. Or laughing because a wave came a little farther up the shore than expected. Or stopping in the middle of a conversation because the baby decided right then was the perfect time to kick.

The session starts to feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending a quiet morning together before your lives change forever. That’s why I love sunrise so much. Nobody’s rushing to make breakfast reservations. The beach hasn’t filled up yet. Your phone stays tucked away because there’s nowhere else you need to be.
For just a little while, it’s simply the two of you. Walking. Talking. Dreaming about who this tiny little person is going to become. Those are some of my favorite moments to photograph because nothing is forced.

If you’re visiting Maui on a babymoon, I always recommend making your maternity session part of a slower morning instead of trying to squeeze it into an already packed itinerary. Grab breakfast afterward, spend the afternoon by the pool, and actually enjoy the rest of your day. If you’re still planning your trip, I put together a guide to planning a Maui babymoon with some of my favorite places to stay, eat, and celebrate this season together.
That’s why so many moms tell me afterward that the session ended up being one of their favorite mornings of the whole trip. Not because of the photos. Because they got to press pause for an hour, they got to breathe and celebrate this season instead of rushing through it.
The photos simply became a reminder of how it all felt.
If you’re wondering when to book beach maternity photos, you’re definitely not alone. This comes up in almost every conversation I have with expecting parents. For most pregnancies, I recommend scheduling your session somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks.

By that point, your bump is popping out, but you’re usually still feeling comfortable enough to walk along the beach, explore a little, and enjoy the morning. Every pregnancy is different, of course, so no magic number works for everyone. The goal is finding that sweet spot where you’re feeling good and can soak in the experience without your session feeling physically exhausting.
If you’re expecting twins or your doctor has mentioned the possibility of delivering early, I’d recommend planning your session a little sooner. It’s always easier to photograph a few weeks earlier than to accidentally wait until you’re no longer feeling up for it.
One thing I also tell my couples? Don’t wait until the last minute to reach out.

If you’re still deciding who you want to trust with your photos, don’t be afraid to ask questions before you book. A maternity session is such a personal experience, and finding someone who helps you feel comfortable matters just as much as loving their portfolio. I put together a guide with five questions to ask your Maui family photographer to help you feel confident you’re choosing the right fit.
Sunrise sessions are some of my most requested Maui maternity photos, especially during busy travel seasons, so booking ahead gives you the best chance of getting the date you want. It also leaves a little flexibility if we need to adjust for weather or if your travel plans shift.

And if you’re wondering whether your partner, kids, or even your pup should join, my answer is almost always yes. This season of life belongs to your whole family, and years from now, you’ll be so glad those little moments were part of the story too.
I might be a little biased… but absolutely!
Between the cooler temperatures, quieter beaches, and soft morning light, sunrise creates such a calm experience. Most moms tell me they were worried about the early alarm, but by the time we’re walking along the beach, they’re so glad they did. Plus, there’s something really special about watching Maui wake up while you’re celebrating such an exciting season of life.

It depends on the time of year, but most sunrise sessions begin about 30 to 45 minutes before the actual sunrise. That gives us time to enjoy the beautiful colors that appear before the sun comes up and capture the changing light as the morning unfolds.
Don’t worry, I always help my couples figure out the timing, so you won’t have to do sunrise math while you’re pregnant.
For most pregnancies, I recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks. By then, your bump is beautifully visible, but you’re usually still comfortable enough to enjoy walking on the beach and moving around during your session.
Every pregnancy is different, though, so if you’re expecting twins or your doctor has recommended delivering earlier, we’ll simply plan your session a little sooner.

Comfort always comes first. Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they catch the ocean breeze naturally, and soft, neutral colors tend to complement Maui’s beaches without competing with the scenery. Most moms end up barefoot for at least part of the session, so don’t stress too much about shoes.
If you’re torn between two outfits, choose the one you feel the most confident in. That confidence always photographs better than any trend ever could.

Please do! Some of my favorite moments happen when partners are making each other laugh or older siblings are talking to the baby before they’ve even met them. These photos aren’t just about documenting your pregnancy; they’re about celebrating your growing family.
Welcome to Maui. 😂 Weather here has a mind of its own, and forecasts don’t always tell the whole story. A little rain shower doesn’t automatically mean we’ll cancel your session. Often, it passes quickly, leaving behind beautifully soft light and sometimes even a rainbow.
If the weather truly isn’t cooperating, we’ll make a plan together. My goal is always to give you the best experience possible, not leave you stressing over the forecast.

Pregnancy has a funny way of making time feel slow and fast all at once. Some days feel endless. Then one day you’re holding your baby, looking back at these photos, wondering how that season went by so quickly.
That’s why I love maternity sessions so much. They’re a chance to stop trying to remember every little detail… and simply be in it for a while. To celebrate everything your body is doing. To spend a quiet morning with the people you love most before your family grows in the most incredible way.
If you’re dreaming about beach maternity photos that feel relaxed, joyful, and true to this season of life, I’d be honored to help you plan them. From choosing the perfect beach to helping you decide what to wear, I’m here to make the entire experience feel easy from start to finish.
