Choosing the right photographer for your family photos can be difficult. There’s a sea of talented photographers, and finding one that you click with but takes beautiful pictures can be challenging. I’ve been there as a Maui family photographer and have a family myself! The struggle to find someone you trust to capture your memories is so real. Over the years, I’ve come up with a list of 5 questions to ask your prospective family photographer before booking. These questions will help you understand their process and also help you better understand what kind of service they provide.

First, ask about their experience. There’s nothing more important than finding a photographer with experience working with families, especially in this area. Maui has various locations that make for great photo spots. However, millions of tourists visit every year. Asking about their experience as a photographer and in the area will help you better understand how they will navigate any mishaps that can arise during your session. It’s also important to make sure they’re a professional photography business. Not only does this protect you and your family, but it also protects them! Most of the time, they’ll have a contract and process that keeps everyone on track and the same page.

When talking to your Maui family photographer, ask them about their process. Do they have a specific spot where they like to take photos, or are there other locations? Most photographers will have a list of favorite locations for their photoshoots, often the places they are most familiar with and know what to expect with foot traffic. Being a heavily populated tourist location, experienced photographers will help you select the best locations and times of day for your photoshoot! Don’t be afraid to express your desire for an overall vibe and location for your shoot. Communication goes a long way.

When talking to various photographers about potentially working together, ask them about their process and how they interact with clients during a shoot, especially with children. As a photographer and mother, I know it’s super important that kiddos always feel comfortable and safe during the session and feel confident in the photographer to be their authentic and genuine selves. The moments captured on camera go beyond the annual family pictures. They can capture crooked smiles, silly phases, skinned knees, and missing teeth. When I work with families, I strive to make everyone feel comfortable and ensure that they get the best photos possible.

Next, make sure you understand the extent of what you’re paying for! All photographers are different and structure their businesses differently. Some photographers charge a set cost for everything, whereas others may charge less initially and offer different options for photo delivery. When contacting potential Maui family photographers, ask them about their packages and how they structure them. Make sure everyone is on the same page regarding expectations and delivery!

Lastly, ask to see a full gallery. While searching through Instagram and Pinterest, you don’t get the whole picture. Photographers only show a few images on their social platforms, making it hard to get a complete feel of their work. Don’t be afraid to ask to see total galleries throughout your research. Often, photographers love to share more of their work, especially if you want to work with them! Make sure to poke around their websites and check out blogs where they may also show more of their work.
Nevertheless, choosing a Maui family photographer can require a lot of research. However, once you find the one, they’ll be your photographer for life! If you’re planning an upcoming Maui vacation and looking for your perfect photographer, reach out today. I’d love to help!
