There are approximately a million ways to get married in Maui (okay, I haven’t counted), but Lisa and Will’s beach wedding in Maui is a pretty dang good argument for keeping things small, getting up before the rest of the island, and letting the ocean do most of the decorating. These two chose a sunrise elopement at White Orchid Beach House, brought in a team of some of my favorite Maui wedding vendors, and had the kind of morning that proves intimate doesn’t have to mean just showing up on a beach and saying your vows.
And here’s the part I REALLY love about White Orchid Beach House: you don’t have to choose between the private venue experience and the whole barefoot, toes-in-the-sand, we came all the way to Maui so obviously we’re getting married next to the ocean experience.
You can do both.
Have your ceremony right on the sand. Take your time with portraits while the morning light is doing its thing. Then head back to White Orchid Beach House for an intimate after-party with champagne, food, cake, a gorgeous picnic setup, or whatever makes you think, yep, THIS is how I want to spend my first few hours being married.

Lisa and Will kept things simple and personal, but their day is such a good example of how much you can make this place your own.

Okay. I’m just gonna say it. Having a private home base completely changes the energy of a beach wedding in Maui.

I LOVE a good Maui beach ceremony. Obviously. But public beaches are still public beaches, which means sometimes your romantic oceanfront wedding also comes with swimmers, beach chairs, somebody setting up approximately seventeen umbrellas nearby, or a kid having the absolute best day of his life with a boogie board behind you. That’s Maui. Honestly, sometimes those little bits of chaos become part of the fun.
That’s where having White Orchid Beach House as your home base becomes REALLY nice. You still get the sandy, oceanside ceremony you came to Maui for, but you also have somewhere private to get ready, regroup, celebrate afterward, and make the whole thing feel like more than a quick ceremony on a public beach.

That flexibility is a huge part of why I love photographing weddings here. You aren’t locked into making every part of your day happen in one exact spot just because that’s what a traditional wedding timeline says you’re supposed to do. You can get ready, head down to the beach for your vows, explore for portraits, and come back to celebrate. For couples bringing a small group of their favorite humans, you can also turn the house into the setting for an intimate after-party with food, drinks, cake, a picnic setup, or whatever sounds like a good way to celebrate the fact that YOU JUST GOT MARRIED IN MAUI.

And if you’re already mentally planning your whole day here and want ALL the details, I have a full White Orchid Beach House wedding venue guide that gets way more into what it’s like to get married at this Maui venue.
If you’re planning a beach house wedding from the mainland, having so much of the experience happen in one general area makes life SO much easier. Less bouncing around Maui and less time sitting in a car in wedding clothes. Less trying to coordinate five different locations on an island you may not know very well yet. More time drinking champagne, staring at the ocean, hugging your people, and realizing, holy crap, we just got married in Maui.

Which is kind of the whole point.
Lisa and Will went even more intimate with their day and chose sunrise, which means setting an alarm at an hour that should probably be illegal on your wedding day. But hear me out.

Maui in the early morning feels TOTALLY different. Everything is quieter, the light starts soft, and there’s something pretty freaking magical about saying your vows while most people are still deciding whether they’re going to hit snooze again. For Lisa and Will, it made their beach wedding in Maui feel like this tiny pocket of time that belonged completely to them.

That was really the whole energy of their morning. Nothing felt like we were trying to cram a giant traditional wedding into a smaller package. It was quiet. Easy. Romantic. They had space to slow down and BE in the fact that this was their wedding morning instead of spending it racing toward whatever was supposed to happen next.
Their Maui beach elopement was also all-inclusive, which meant Lisa and Will didn’t have to spend the weeks leading up to their wedding trying to become part-time Maui wedding planners from hundreds (or thousands) of miles away. We already had the dream team. Maui Luxe Picnics helped bring the experience together, Sean officiated their ceremony, Giovanni handled hair and makeup, Petite Maui created the florals, and I got to do what I love most: document the whole dang thing.
THIS is what good vendors should do for you. Make the day easier to live in.

That’s what I love about doing an elopement this way. You still get the flowers, the getting-ready experience, a meaningful ceremony, and all those little details that make the morning feel special. You just get to be way more intentional about which pieces belong in YOUR wedding.
And if this whole keep the meaningful stuff, ditch the rest approach is sounding VERY much like your kind of wedding, take a peek at my Maui wedding and elopement packages. They’re built to give you room to make the day yours instead of squeezing your wedding into somebody else’s idea of what it should look like.
By the time Lisa and Will were standing together for their ceremony, Maui was still waking up around them. Bare feet in the sand. Ocean right there. Soft morning light. Just the two of them, their vows, and that slightly surreal feeling of, wait…we’re really doing this.

THIS is why tiny beach ceremonies get me.
There’s something about an intimate ceremony that makes you notice everything a little more. There isn’t a huge production happening around you or 150 people waiting for the next thing on the timeline. You can hear the vows, the waves, and you can look at each other without feeling like you need to perform the moment for anyone else.

From my side of the camera, those are the ceremonies I LOVE photographing because I can pay attention to the little things. The way you’re holding hands. The face you make when your person says something that gets you. The wind catching your clothes. The second right after the ceremony when it sinks in that you’re married.

Since you’re already on the beach, we don’t have to immediately switch into okay, ceremony is over, everybody into the car! mode. We can let that moment breathe before moving into portraits.
Okay, prepare for the photographer side of me to come out; things may get a little nerdy.

Timing matters SO much for any Maui wedding, but especially when you’re getting married on the beach. Maui sunshine is gorgeous, but she is not shy. Middle-of-the-day light can get bright FAST, which means harsher shadows, hotter sand, and a whole lot more squinting than anybody wants in their wedding photos.

Sunrise gives us something completely different. The light starts softer, everything feels quieter, and instead of fighting the sun, I can use it. That’s a huge reason Lisa and Will’s morning photos looked so beautiful.

With Lisa and Will, we got to use that light from the beginning. We didn’t need to suddenly stop the wedding so we could “go take wedding photos.” We were already there. They were already together on the beach. So we wandered, let them soak it all in, and made portraits part of the morning instead of turning them into another thing on the timeline.

This is also where choosing a Maui wedding photographer who understands the island makes a difference. Maui light changes quickly. Clouds move in and out, wind picks up, the tide matters, and sometimes the spot that looked perfect twenty minutes ago isn’t where I want you anymore. I don’t want you spending your wedding morning worrying about any of that. You get to be married. I’ll keep an eye on the light.
Please don’t feel like having an intimate wedding means we need to spend the entire morning posing you. Absolutely not. We’ll make the beautiful portraits your parents will immediately want framed, but I also want the laughing-between-photos, walking-through-the-sand, fixing-each-other’s-clothes, holy crap we’re married parts. Those usually end up being the photographs that feel the most like you anyway.

If you want a Maui wedding photographer who’s going to keep an eye on the light, help with the weird little logistics, and still give you room to actually BE together, hi, that’s pretty much my favorite job. Come meet Shannon and get to know the person who’ll be wandering the beach with you, camera in hand.
THIS might be my favorite part of doing a beach wedding here: saying your vows doesn’t have to mean the experience is suddenly over.

You just got married in Maui!!! I don’t want you looking at each other ten minutes later like, well…I guess we go back to the hotel now?
If you’re bringing your closest people, head back to White Orchid Beach House and keep celebrating. Bring in an incredible meal. Have champagne waiting. Cut a cake. Let Maui Luxe Picnics create something beautiful. Put on music. Sit around a table overlooking paradise with the people you love and let the fact that YOU’RE MARRIED sink in a little.
Honestly, that’s part of the beauty of a beach house wedding. The celebration can feel less like moving through a checklist of reception events and more like hosting the best dinner party of your life…except everyone is in Maui and you just got married.

If it’s only the two of you? You still get to celebrate. Have breakfast together, pop something bubbly, change clothes and go explore, take a nap (sunrise couples, you’ve earned it), or make an entire day out of being newlyweds on the island.
You flew all the way to Maui to get married. MAKE A DAY OF IT.

After photographing weddings at White Orchid Beach House, there are a few things I’d keep in mind when planning your own beach wedding in Maui.
And if you’re doing all of this from a few thousand miles away, I have a whole guide to planning a wedding in Hawaii from the mainland because, yes, figuring out an island wedding from your couch somewhere very much NOT on an island comes with its own set of questions.

The softer morning light and quieter feeling can be so worth the early alarm. We’ll work backward from the ceremony time when planning hair, makeup, getting ready, and photography so you aren’t trying to figure that math out yourself.
A small wedding should feel easier, not like you suddenly have seven new jobs. Having people you trust handling your florals, beauty, ceremony, setup, and photography means those things aren’t becoming YOUR jobs on your wedding morning. You get to show up and enjoy the dang thing.

This is especially important if you’re bringing guests. Your ceremony may only last a short time, but that doesn’t mean the celebration has to. White Orchid Beach House gives you the opportunity to create an intimate after-party that feels completely different from a traditional reception.
Wind happens. Clouds roll through. Hair moves. The ocean does whatever the ocean feels like doing that day. We’ll plan around what we can, but I promise your wedding isn’t ruined because every strand of hair didn’t stay exactly where Giovanni put it. Some of my favorite photographs happen when couples stop fighting the island and just lean into being here.

Even with a tiny guest list, I don’t want your wedding to feel like we’re racing from one pretty thing to another. Give yourselves time to stand on the beach after your ceremony. Hug your people. Drink the champagne. Watch the water. Let somebody cry without immediately checking what comes next on the timeline. Those are the parts that make the day yours.

Lisa and Will’s sunrise elopement came together with a team of Maui wedding vendors I absolutely love working alongside:
Venue: White Orchid Beach House
Planning + Experience: Maui Luxe Picnics
Officiant: Sean with Keliipono Production
Hair + Makeup: Giovanni with Giovanna Bridal
Florals: Petite Maui
Photography + Videography: Shannon Wolfe Photography

Whether you’re dreaming about sunrise vows with just the two of you or a sandy ceremony followed by an intimate celebration at White Orchid Beach House with everyone you love most, I want your wedding to feel like something you’re LIVING in. Not a photoshoot or a performance. Not six hours of wondering what comes next on the timeline.
You don’t have to figure all of this out from the mainland by yourself either. I’ll help you think through timing, light, ceremony locations, portraits, Maui vendors, and all those weird little logistics you probably don’t know you need to think about yet. That’s my job. You have enough going on!

If you’re looking for a Maui wedding photographer who cares just as much about how your wedding feels as how it photographs, I’m SO in. Come get married barefoot by the ocean. Bring your favorite people or don’t bring anybody at all. Drink champagne afterward. Take the nap if you chose sunrise. Make the day completely yours.
