There comes a point when planning a wedding in Hawaii, where every couple ends up asking themselves the exact same question. “Are we completely overthinking this?” The answer? Probably. 😂 I don’t say that to make fun of anyone. I say it because I’ve watched it happen over and over again. You start by looking at Maui wedding venues.
Then you’re comparing beaches you’ve never been to, wondering if you need permits, trying to figure out whether sunset is at 6:42 or 6:57. Somehow you’ve convinced yourself you need to become an expert on an island that’s probably 2,500 miles away before you can even book a photographer. (Wedding planning is weird like that.)
The funny thing is that by the time most of my couples arrive in Maui, they’re always surprised by the same thing. “This was so much easier than we thought.” Not because planning from the mainland is effortless. But because you were never supposed to figure it all out by yourself.
As a Maui wedding photographer, I spend a lot of time helping couples with things that have absolutely nothing to do with photography. Recommending venues. Connecting them with planners and florists I genuinely love. Talking through timelines. Helping them decide whether a private estate or a Maui beach wedding feels more like them.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped feeling like “just the photographer” and started becoming the person couples text when they’re wondering if they’re making the right decision. Honestly? I kind of love it. Planning a wedding in Hawaii shouldn’t feel like you’re studying for an exam. It should feel exciting. A little adventurous. Maybe even fun.
So before you open another seventeen browser tabs trying to become a Hawaii wedding expert, let’s talk about the things nobody really tells you until you get here.
Not because you need to have every little detail figured out. Actually…kind of the opposite. I think one of the biggest surprises for mainland couples is realizing that planning a wedding in Hawaii isn’t about making more decisions earlier. It’s about making the right decisions earlier.
I’ve watched couples spend weeks debating invitation suites, color palettes, and table settings before they’ve booked the things that shape their entire experience. Meanwhile, the venue they loved or the Maui wedding photographer they’d been following for months quietly books their date.
I think people sometimes assume Hawaii works like a major city where there are endless vendors to choose from. Then they start planning and realize…oh. We’re talking about an island in the middle of the Pacific. 😂 There are only so many Saturdays in a year, and only so many incredible planners, florists, photographers, and venues to go around. That’s why I always tell couples to start with the big pieces first. Once you’ve found your date and your people, the rest of the planning starts feeling a whole lot less overwhelming.
That’s why I usually recommend starting with the big pieces first.

Everything else gets so much easier after that.
And if you’re still figuring out whether a larger celebration or something smaller feels more like you, I put together a guide to planning a micro wedding in Maui that walks through why so many couples are choosing a more intimate wedding experience here in Hawaii.
For larger Maui weddings, I usually recommend reaching out 12–18 months in advance. Smaller weddings and elopements often have a little more flexibility, but truthfully? Earlier almost always means less stress and more options.
Can I save you from one mistake I see all the time? You do not need your flowers picked out don’t need to know what your napkins are doing yet. You just need somewhere to start.
Once you’ve built your foundation, all those other decisions stop feeling quite so overwhelming, promise!

Here’s something I wish every couple knew before they started planning: You don’t have to become an expert on Hawaii before you get here. Seriously!!
I blame social media a little for this. Somewhere along the way it convinced everyone they need to become an honorary Maui local before they can even send an inquiry. Suddenly, you’re researching permit requirements, trying to compare beaches you’ve never seen in person, reading reviews for fifteen different florists, and wondering if you should somehow know which side of the island has the best sunsets.

Nobody starts out knowing those things. And truth be told? You shouldn’t have to.
One of my favorite parts about being a Hawaii wedding photographer has very little to do with photography. It’s watching couples realize they don’t have to figure all of this out alone. By the time my couples arrive in Maui, we’ve usually talked about so much more than photos. We’ve narrowed down ceremony locations, talked through timelines, figured out whether a private venue or a Maui beach wedding makes more sense, and connected them with planners, florists, officiants, musicians, and hair and makeup artists that I genuinely love recommending.
That’s the beauty of hiring local vendors. We’ve already spent years building those relationships.

Instead of spending weeks trying to figure out who to trust from thousands of miles away, you get people who already know each other, work well together, and genuinely care about making your wedding day feel easy. Trust me, that’s a really nice feeling when you’re planning a wedding from the mainland.

Another question I get all the time is whether you need to fly to Maui before your wedding just to see everything in person. Honestly? Most of my couples don’t. Between video calls, venue walkthroughs, planning meetings, and local recommendations, it’s completely possible to plan a wedding in Hawaii from the mainland without making an extra trip. Then they step onto their ceremony beach for the very first time on their wedding day…and I kind of love that.
People ask me all the time what my favorite wedding venue in Maui is. I always kind of laugh a little before I answer. I know they’re hoping I’ll just give them one name and make the decision easy.
But, I don’t think there’s one perfect venue. I think the perfect venue for you is going to be different from someone else’s, and that’s how it should be! Here are a couple of my favorite Maui wedding venues that I always recommend.

If you’re dreaming about something intimate, private, and completely centered around spending time with your favorite people, I will probably tell you to look at White Orchid Beach House first.
I talk about it a lot for a reason. This is the kind of place where you show up, kick off your shoes, and just…stay.
You get ready there, have your ceremony there, and wander down to the beach for photos without anyone rushing you. Then you come back, pour a drink, sit down for dinner, and suddenly it’s dark, and you’re still laughing with your people under the lights.
No vans or timelines that feel like a relay race. No, “Okay, everyone, we have to leave in five minutes.” I cannot tell you how much that changes the energy of a wedding day.

When you’re not constantly packing up and moving, everything softens. People linger. Conversations stretch out. Dinner turns into stories; stories turn into dancing, and nobody’s checking the time.
It just feels like being together.
If you’re curious what a full wedding day at White Orchid Beach House actually looks like, from getting ready all the way through sunset portraits and dinner, I put together a complete guide to the venue that walks through everything you can expect.
It just feels like being together.

If your vision leans a little more toward a luxury resort experience, The Andaz Maui is another place I absolutely LOVE. It’s polished in the best way. The views are unreal, the staff is incredible, and everything runs so smoothly that you don’t have to think about a single logistical detail once you’re there.
It’s also such a fun option if you want your wedding to double as a full-on vacation for your guests. People aren’t just flying in for one day and leaving. They’re settling in. Pool days, dinners, beach walks, slow mornings: it becomes this shared experience instead of just an event.
If you’ve been dreaming about a luxury resort wedding where your guests can truly settle into island life, I also put together a complete guide to getting married at the Andaz Maui so you can get a feel for what a wedding weekend there is really like.

That changes things too. They’re completely different experiences. Neither one is better.
It just comes back to the question I ask almost every couple: “What do you want your wedding to feel like?” I’ve found that’s almost always a better place to start than asking what you want it to look like.
Want to hear something most people don’t realize about Maui? Everybody thinks Maui wedding photographers are obsessed with sunsets because of the light. And sure…the light is incredible.

That’s not why I build so many wedding timelines around it. I do it because the sunset changes the entire mood of the island. Maui kind of starts exhaling. The beaches get quieter. Families start wandering toward dinner. Somebody’s carrying sandy kids back to the car. The ocean somehow feels calmer (even though I swear it hasn’t actually changed 😂). Suddenly, the whole island feels like it’s settling in for the evening.
I’ve watched it happen hundreds of times. Couples who spent the whole morning worrying about timelines suddenly aren’t worried about anything anymore.
They’re barefoot and laughing. They’re talking about where they want to grab dinner tomorrow and watching the sky turn every shade of pink and orange while realizing… “Oh wow…we’re really married.”

Those are my favorite photos. Not because the light is pretty. But that’s usually the first moment all day when everything finally sinks in. That’s why I always tell couples that if there’s one thing worth planning around, it’s sunset. Not because it makes better pictures.
It helps create the kind of wedding day you’ll want to remember.
Okay, island bestie moment. Please…Do not spend nine months planning one day and five minutes planning the rest of your trip! You’re already flying all the way to Hawaii. Let yourself enjoy Hawaii. Give yourself a few extra days if you can. Go get shave ice. (Then immediately let somebody convince you to try a different shave ice place because apparently everyone has VERY strong opinions about which one is best.) Also, I do have the best shave ice recommendations, just sayin’.

Wake up early one morning and watch the sea turtles while you’re drinking coffee. Take the scenic route even if it takes a little longer. Stop at the roadside fruit stand because the vibrant fruit caught your eye.
Order the banana bread, the poke, and dessert too. You’re on vacation! One of my favorite things about Maui is that it constantly convinces people to slow down.
You head to the beach to watch the sunset for “a few minutes,” and somehow it’s an hour later because nobody wanted to leave. Maybe you grab dinner and end up sitting there until the restaurant is practically empty because the conversation was too good to cut short.

You find a beach on your first day and somehow end up going back three more times because it just feels like your beach. Those are the stories my couples tell me after they get home. Not just about the wedding. About the week.
Somewhere along the way, Maui stopped feeling like the place they got married and started feeling like part of their story. I think that’s pretty special.
If you’ve made it this far, can I give you one piece of advice? Don’t plan the wedding you think you’re supposed to have. Plan the one you’re excited to wake up for.
Somewhere along the way, weddings became performances. There’s this quiet pressure to invite everyone, fill every minute of the timeline, make sure every guest is entertained, and somehow create a day that’s worthy of Pinterest, Instagram, and your great-aunt Carol’s expectations all at the same time.

That’s…a lot, and I don’t think that’s why you’re coming all the way to Hawaii. You’re coming because something about getting married here feels different.
More relaxed, intentional, and like real life. So lean into that. Eat dinner. Watch the sunset. Take your shoes off. Leave room in your timeline for absolutely nothing. Because “nothing” has a funny way of becoming your favorite memory.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched couples wander down to the beach after dinner with no plan whatsoever. Ten minutes later, they’re skipping rocks, laughing about something nobody else heard, or standing there in complete silence watching the waves.

You can’t put that on a timeline or schedule it. You certainly can’t force it. But you can leave enough room for it to happen. I think that’s the biggest secret to planning a wedding in Hawaii.
The island doesn’t ask you to do more.
It asks you to slow down.
If you let it, it’ll remind you that this was never about creating the perfect wedding. It was always about marrying your favorite person in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Everything else is just icing on the haupia pie.
Absolutely. In fact, a lot of my couples don’t see Maui until wedding week.
Between video calls, virtual venue tours, local vendor recommendations, and about a million messages back and forth, planning from the mainland is way more doable than people expect. That’s seriously one of my favorite parts of my job, helping couples feel like they have someone on the island looking out for them long before they ever step on a plane.

If you have your heart set on a particular venue or Maui wedding photographer, I’d recommend reaching out 12–18 months ahead of time if you can. Maui is a small island, and dates can fill surprisingly fast.
The good news? You don’t need every detail figured out before you inquire. We can sort through the rest together.
I wish I had one perfect answer for you, but Maui likes to show off year-round.
Spring is lush, summer has those long golden evenings, fall is quieter than people expect, and winter comes with the chance of spotting whales during your portraits (which somehow never gets old).
The best time really depends on the experience you want to have, not just the weather forecast.

Not always, and fully depends on your guest count and timeline, but I do think having someone local in your corner makes planning from the mainland feel so much easier.
Whether that’s a planner, a coordinator, or a photographer who can connect you with trusted vendors, having someone who knows the island takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process.
If you’re planning a Maui beach wedding, there’s a good chance you’ll need permits depending on the location and ceremony setup. The good news? This is something your planner, photographer, or officiant can help you navigate, so you don’t have to become an expert before you arrive.

Honestly? I don’t think one is better than the other. I think they’re just different. Some couples love the simplicity of a beach ceremony with the ocean as their backdrop. Others want the privacy and ease of having everything happen in one place at a venue like White Orchid Beach House or The Andaz.
It all comes back to one question: “What do you want your wedding to feel like?”
That’s usually where the answer becomes pretty obvious.
Here’s the thing. Planning a wedding in Hawaii from the mainland doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. You don’t have to spend weeks trying to figure out permits. Or wonder which beach is right for your guest count, or cross your fingers hoping you picked the right vendors from thousands of miles away.

That’s what I’m here for. Yes, I’ll photograph your wedding. And I promise I’ll put my whole heart into documenting it. But I’ll also help you build a timeline that leaves room to breathe, connect you with vendors I genuinely trust, recommend locations that fit the kind of experience you’re dreaming about, and answer all the random questions that somehow pop into your head at 10:30 on a Tuesday night.

Because I don’t just want you to have beautiful photos. I want you to arrive in Maui feeling excited instead of overwhelmed. If you’re dreaming about a relaxed, intentional wedding in Hawaii that feels like you, I’d love to help you bring it to life.
Reach out, tell me what you’re dreaming, and let’s start planning something pretty incredible together.
