There is a very specific moment during beach engagement photos when I know we’ve won. It’s when you stop looking at me. You’re too busy laughing because your fiancé almost ate it running into the ocean, trying to climb onto a floatie with absolutely zero grace, or realizing that yes, the wave coming toward you is MUCH bigger than you thought it was. You’ve officially forgotten we’re taking photos, and I’m somewhere nearby thinking, yep. There it is.
Beach engagement photos don’t require you to suddenly develop modeling skills you have never had before. You don’t need to spend the week practicing poses, know what to do with your hands, or somehow produce a perfectly candid laugh because I pointed a camera at you. Honestly, please don’t. I would much rather photograph the two of you having fun together.
Your engagement session can have range, too. You can start dressed up, looking wildly in love with the Maui coastline behind you, and end an hour later in swimsuits, running into the ocean with giant floaties. Romantic and ridiculous are allowed to exist in the same gallery. I think they should.
As a Maui engagement photographer, that’s what I want these sessions to feel like. Less like we’re here to perform for the camera, and more like we’re on a really good beach date and Shannon happens to be third-wheeling with a camera.
So if the thought of posing your way through an entire engagement session makes you want to conveniently “forget” to schedule one, good news. We’re not doing that.

First things first: you are not responsible for knowing how to be photographed. I cannot emphasize that enough. I hear some version of “we’re so awkward in photos” ALL the time, usually followed by a warning that at least one person in the relationship has no idea what to do when a camera appears. Every time, I’m thinking, perfect. You sound like approximately every normal human I’ve ever photographed.

That’s why I’m much more interested in creating situations where the two of you naturally interact than moving you through a list of poses. I’ll give you direction when you need it, then give you something to do together so you’re paying attention to each other instead of wondering what I’m doing behind the camera.
Eventually, something shifts. You stop thinking quite so much about the photos. That’s usually when they start getting really good.

And if you’re already thinking, okay, THIS sounds more like us, you can take a peek at my Maui couples photography experience to see more of what working together looks like. You bring your person. I’ll bring the camera, the direction, and a plan that doesn’t involve spending an hour wondering what to do with your hands.
Here’s something I think we overcomplicate with engagement photos: the session itself should sound fun to you. Not fun to the couple whose photos you saved on Pinterest. Not fun because TikTok has collectively decided everyone needs to bring a picnic basket to their engagement session this year. Fun to you two.
Get in the ocean. Bring surfboards because you love surfing together. Wander the beach, crack open a drink, run around barefoot, or show up with the most obnoxiously adorable pool floaties we can find. The point isn’t to fill your Maui engagement photos with activities. It’s to give you something to enjoy together until you’re thinking a whole lot less about the camera.

I am VERY here for a good prop when it gives us something to do. These floaties are the perfect example. Sure, they’re cute in photos. But more importantly, you can run down the beach carrying them, climb onto them, splash each other, float around, peek through them, and inevitably discover that getting onto an inflatable gracefully in the ocean is apparently an impossible human task.
Before you order seventeen things for your session because they looked cute on Pinterest, ask yourself: will we really use this?

If yes, bring it. If it’s just going to sit beside you in the sand while we carefully arrange it for photographs, we can probably leave it at the hotel. The best Hawaii engagement photos aren’t interesting because somebody found the perfect collection of props. They’re interesting because you can see something real happening between the people in them.
Can I tell you something I wish more couples knew? You don’t have to pick a personality for your engagement photos.
You can want the romantic, dressed-up photos where your outfits are perfect, the light is doing its thing, and you look like you casually spend every Tuesday evening wandering along the beaches of Maui looking incredible together. You can also want the photos where you’re in swimsuits, your hair is wet, someone is being attacked by a wave, and whatever dignity we started the session with has officially been left somewhere on the shore.

I LOVE starting beach engagement photos with the dressier look. Everyone is still dry, hair and makeup are cooperating, and we can take our time creating those romantic photographs you probably pictured when you first started thinking about your engagement session. Then, as the evening goes on, we loosen things up. Shoes come off, swimsuits go on, and if you’re up for it, we head straight into the ocean.
By the time you’re running into the water, you’ve already had time to settle in with me and the camera. Now you’re thinking about how cold that wave was, whether your fiancé is about to splash you, and why getting onto a floatie looked significantly easier from shore.
And THAT is exactly where I want you.

You get the beautiful, romantic Maui engagement photos and the slightly chaotic ones that make you laugh every time you see them. Your relationship probably isn’t serious and romantic 100% of the time, so your photos don’t have to be either.
Standing still while someone points a camera at you is inherently a little weird. There. I said it.
That’s why we’ll walk, run toward the water, splash each other, dance badly, bump hips, climb onto a floatie, and generally give your limbs something better to do. And somewhere in all that movement are the reactions I could never ask you to fake: the laugh after someone trips, the way you instinctively reach for each other, the look you give your person when they’re being ridiculous.
Of course I’ll slow things down when the moment calls for it. We’ll get the romantic portraits. We’ll get the photo your parents immediately want printed. But then we’re moving again.

Here’s where I think the word candid can get a little confusing. You might hear “candid engagement photos” and picture me standing approximately half a mile down the beach with a giant lens while you two are left wondering whether you’re supposed to walk, kiss, talk about your grocery list, or simply pretend I no longer exist.
That’s…not quite the plan.
Natural photographs still need direction. I’ll put you in good light, give you something to do when you need it, fix the little things worth fixing, and then give the moment some room.

Because usually the good stuff happens right after the thing I asked you to do: the laugh afterward, the look between you, the completely unplanned splash that starts a tiny war in the ocean. That’s what I’m watching for.
So no, you do not need to arrive knowing how to create candid Hawaii engagement photos. I’ll give you enough direction that you never feel stranded in front of the camera, without directing the personality right out of the two of you.

Want to see what that looks like? Take a peek through my galleries and you’ll see plenty of the romantic stuff, but also the windblown hair, belly laughs, movement, and little in-between moments I’m always watching for.
This may be slightly controversial coming from the person you’re hiring to make your photos look beautiful, but I don’t want everything to go perfectly. Especially at the beach.

Maui has wind. The ocean has opinions. Sand will get on you. Hair will move. A wave will probably come farther up the beach than any of us anticipated. And if we spend the entire session trying to prevent every single one of those things, we’re going to miss half the fun of being there.
So let the dress move in the wind. Take your shoes off. Run into the water. Laugh when something goes sideways instead of immediately trying to fix it. Respectfully, if we get to the end of your Maui engagement photos and there isn’t at least a little sand somewhere it absolutely does not belong, did we even go to the beach?

That doesn’t mean I’m throwing the plan out the window and hoping Maui figures it out for us. I’m still watching the light, the wind, the ocean, your surroundings, and all the little details that make photographs work. You just don’t need to be the person worrying about them.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s giving you enough freedom that when something unexpected happens, your first instinct is to laugh with your person instead of wondering whether it ruined the photo. Spoiler: it probably made it better.
I will never tell you that you can’t wear something you love for your engagement photos. If you have been waiting for an excuse to wear the dress, WEAR THE DRESS. But when we’re planning beach engagement photos, I also want you to think about what you’ll be able to do in it.

Can you walk comfortably in the sand? Does the fabric move when the wind catches it? Can your person pull you in close without you immediately worrying about wrinkling something?
Because we’re going to move.
Flowy dresses and lightweight fabrics photograph beautifully on the beach because Maui basically does half the work for us. A little breeze catches the fabric, your hair moves, and suddenly there is movement in the photograph before I’ve even asked you to do anything.

Please wear something that still feels like you. Your engagement session is not the time to debut an entirely new personality because someone on Pinterest looked cute in a beige linen set.
There is a method to my madness here. If we’re getting in the water, we’ll save it for the end so you can stop worrying about staying dry the second your feet hit the ocean.

Hair gets wet? Fine. Giant wave takes both of you out? Excellent! You walk back to the car looking considerably less put together than when you arrived? Sounds like we did our jobs.
Of course, the ocean gets the final vote. Conditions matter, and there are days when getting into the water isn’t the smart move. No photograph is worth ignoring what the ocean is doing. That’s another reason having someone who knows Maui matters: we can make a plan, watch the conditions, and adjust when we need to.
Can we talk about sunset for a second? Because “sunset engagement session” does not mean we show up five minutes before the sun disappears, take twelve frantic photos, and call it a day.

The light changes throughout the evening, and I want to use all of it.
Depending on the location and time of year, we may start while there’s still plenty of light and slowly work our way toward sunset. That gives us time for your first outfit, room to move around without rushing, and a completely different look as the light gets softer.
Then the sun starts dropping, Maui does that whole casually showing off thing, and the beach changes again.
But timing isn’t only about getting a pretty sunset. Wind, crowds, tides, and the specific beach we’re using can all affect when and where your session makes the most sense. Two beaches that are relatively close to each other can photograph completely differently on the same evening.

That’s why I don’t want you stressing over finding the “perfect” time for your Maui engagement photos on your own. Tell me what you’re envisioning, and I’ll help figure out the logistics that get us there. Pretty light is great. Pretty light without having to elbow our way through 300 beach chairs is even better.
Pinterest can be SO helpful when you’re figuring out what you’re drawn to. Save the outfits. Save the movement you love and save the photos that make you immediately think, I want ours to feel like that.

But then? We make it yours. Your Hawaii engagement photos don’t need to be a recreation of another couple’s session for them to be beautiful.
What matters to me is that when you look through your gallery, you recognize yourselves in it.
Not just what you looked like while you were engaged, either. I want you to remember how your person made you laugh. The way you automatically reached for each other. Who was more likely to start the splash fight and who absolutely took it too far. The little things that are completely ordinary to you right now and might be the things you love most about these photographs years from now.

That’s why I’m never trying to turn every couple into the same version of “romantic.” You already have your own thing going on. Let’s photograph that.
Wear something you feel really good in and can move in. I love outfits with movement and texture at the beach, but there isn’t a required Maui uniform hiding somewhere on the internet. You can dress up, keep it casual, or bring two looks and do both.
And if you’re planning to get in the ocean, bring swimsuits or make your second outfit something you’re completely okay getting wet. Once we’re in the water, all bets are off.

YES, when conditions allow.
I usually recommend saving the ocean portion for the end so we can get all your dry photos first and then stop worrying about hair, clothes, and staying remotely presentable. We’ll also pay attention to the conditions at your location because the ocean is not a prop, and safety always wins.
It depends on the beach, season, conditions, and the look you want, but golden hour into sunset is gorgeous for engagement sessions. I plan timing around the location rather than giving every couple the exact same start time.
As your Maui engagement photographer, that’s part of what I’ll help you figure out. You do not need to become an expert in Maui sunsets before you book me.

Welcome. You have found your people. You don’t need to know how to pose, and you definitely don’t need to practice. I’ll give you direction, keep you moving, and create opportunities for the two of you to interact naturally.
Usually the hardest part is the first few minutes when you’re still very aware that I have a camera. Then you realize I’m not going to make you stare lovingly into each other’s eyes for sixty consecutive minutes, and everybody relaxes.
If they make sense for you, absolutely. My favorite props are things you can do something with. Floaties? Obviously yes. Surfboards? Yes. A bottle of champagne you’re going to drink? We’re getting somewhere.
If it’s something you’re only bringing because Pinterest told you engagement sessions require props? You have my full permission to leave it at the hotel.

Absolutely. Two outfits can give your gallery completely different energy without requiring two separate sessions. Start with something dressier, then change into swimsuits or a more casual look later. If we’re getting in the ocean, we’ll save that outfit for last for reasons that will become VERY obvious after the first wave.

If you’ve made it this far and your biggest takeaway is, wait…our engagement photos could be FUN? Then I’ve done my job.
You don’t need to show up knowing your good side, memorize poses from Pinterest, or spend the evening wondering whether your hands are doing something weird. You just need to show up ready to hang out with your person.

I’ll take it from there.
As your Maui engagement photographer, I’ll help you choose a location, figure out the best timing, talk through your ideas, and give you all the direction you need once we’re together. You get to hang out with your person while I happily third-wheel your date with a camera.
If you’re planning Maui engagement photos and want a session that feels less like posing for an hour and more like a really good evening together, I’d LOVE to hear what you’re dreaming up. Whether you’re celebrating your engagement while you’re visiting the island or looking for a Maui wedding photographer to document everything from this season through your wedding day, let’s make some photographs that feel like the two of you.

Come dressed up. Bring the swimsuits. We’ll see where the evening takes us!
