There are plenty of things I’m totally fine with you figuring out for the first time on your wedding day. How to cut a wedding cake without absolutely butchering it? Sure. Whether you can actually dance in those shoes? We’ll find out together. But how it feels to have me following you around with a camera during some of the most emotional moments of your life? That’s something I’d rather you already know. It’s exactly why I include engagement photos in Maui complimentary with my full-day wedding photography packages.
Your engagement session isn’t just an opportunity to get some really freaking beautiful photos of the two of you in Hawaii (although, obviously, we’re doing that too). It’s our chance to spend time together before the wedding, get comfortable with each other, figure out what makes you laugh, and make being photographed feel significantly less like being photographed.
When your wedding day arrives, I don’t want to feel like a stranger who just showed up with two cameras. I want you to see me and think, Oh good, Shannon’s here.
That kind of comfort doesn’t happen by accident. It’s something I’ve intentionally built into the way I work with my couples from the very beginning. If you’re curious about what that looks like after the engagement session, you can explore my Maui wedding photography packages here.

I know engagement photos can sometimes feel like one of those optional wedding things. You already hired a photographer for the wedding. You already have approximately 4,000 things to plan. Do you really need another photo session?
I’m obviously biased, but YES. And not just because engagement photos in Maui are gorgeous. An engagement session gives us something incredibly valuable before the wedding: time without pressure.
There’s no ceremony starting in twenty minutes. Nobody’s asking where Grandma went. Your coordinator isn’t looking for the missing boutonniere. We aren’t trying to squeeze portraits between family photos and cocktail hour. It’s just the two of you, me, Maui, and enough time to actually settle into the experience.
That matters because the more comfortable you are with me before your wedding, the less aware you’ll be of me when the wedding actually happens.
And that is where the good stuff lives.

Most of my couples are not professional models. Shocking, I know. You probably don’t spend your weekends wandering romantically down beaches while someone photographs you from several angles. You might even tell me some version of, “We’re really awkward in photos.”
You and approximately 97% of the couples I photograph. That’s part of why I love doing Maui engagement photos before the wedding. You get to experience my approach when there’s absolutely nothing at stake.
I can learn how you naturally interact. Maybe you immediately start teasing each other, maybe one of you gets the giggles every time I ask you to get close, or maybe you’re quieter and naturally fall into those sweet, cozy moments together.
I’m paying attention to all of it, and you’re learning something too: you don’t have to know what to do. I’ll guide you when you need it. I’ll give you something to do when standing there suddenly makes you forget how arms work. And then I’ll back off when the real moment starts happening.
By the end of your session, there’s usually a very noticeable shift. The cameras stop feeling like such a thing. You start paying more attention to each other than to me. That is exactly what I want.

Think about how much time you spend with your photographer on your wedding day. I might be there while you’re getting dressed. When your mom sees you for the first time. During the deep breath right before your ceremony. While you say your vows. When you sneak away together after dinner because you finally have five quiet minutes to realize, holy crap, we’re married.
Those are intimate moments.
While I’m very good at walking into a room and making friends (occupational hazard), there’s something different about already knowing each other. Your engagement session gives us that head start. We’ve already talked. We’ve already laughed together. You know how I work. I know more about how the two of you interact.
So when I show up on your wedding day as your Maui wedding photographer, we aren’t starting at zero. That comfort is a huge part of creating photographs that actually feel like you.

Here’s the funny thing about natural wedding photography: getting photographs that look effortless usually requires you to feel safe enough to stop performing for the camera. That can take a minute. At the beginning of your engagement session, you may notice the camera more. You might wonder where to put your hands or whether you should smile.
That’s okay. That’s literally why we’re there. We’ll walk. Explore. Talk. Probably laugh at something ridiculous. You’ll get used to hearing my camera clicking while you’re doing completely normal things.
Somewhere along the way, you stop thinking about it so much. That experience carries directly into your wedding. When I lift my camera during a quiet moment between the two of you, you don’t immediately think, Oh, she’s taking a picture. Quick, do something cute.

Please do not do something cute. Keep doing whatever you were doing because you already know you can trust me to take care of the photograph.
And if you’re thinking, Okay, but what does this actually look like when you’re the one in front of the camera? You can watch some of our behind-the-scenes videos and reels here. You’ll get a much better feel for how we photograph our couples, how much movement and laughter is involved, and why this experience feels a whole lot less like standing around posing for pictures.

There’s another reason I love engagement sessions: your wedding photos and engagement photos don’t have to do the same job. Your wedding has a timeline, guests, a ceremony location, florals, outfits, traditions, and a whole story already built into the day.

Your engagement session? We can PLAY.
Want beach engagement photos with bare feet and salty hair? Done. Want something a little moodier or more adventurous? Let’s find somewhere that feels like you. Want to splash in the water at the end and accept that whatever happens to your hair after that is between you and the Pacific Ocean? Even better.

Your beach couple photos can feel relaxed and playful because there’s nowhere else you have to be afterward. And if you’re traveling to Hawaii for your wedding, it gives you another little piece of Maui to remember outside of the wedding itself.
Engagement sessions aren’t auditions for your wedding photos. I’m not secretly grading your ability to cuddle on a beach. What I am doing is learning. Some couples love movement. Some naturally gravitate toward quieter moments. Some cannot look at each other for more than three seconds without laughing.
GOOD. I want to know that.
Your Maui engagement photos give me a chance to see what brings out the most natural version of your relationship so I can carry that knowledge into your wedding day. Instead of approaching every couple with the same list of poses, I can photograph you based on what I’ve already learned about you. That’s a much bigger deal to me than creating something technically perfect. I want you to recognize yourselves in your photos.

There’s a practical side to all of this too. Having engagement photos in Maui gives you the opportunity to see yourself professionally photographed before your wedding day.
Maybe you realize you LOVE the photographs where you’re moving and laughing. Maybe the close, quiet images become your favorites, or you realize that after five minutes you completely forgot about the thing you were self-conscious about beforehand.

All of that can build confidence going into the wedding. You’ll know what the experience feels like, you’ll know I have you, and you won’t spend your wedding morning wondering whether you’re going to feel awkward once the camera comes out.
One less unknown? I will take it.

The short version: something that feels like you. The slightly more helpful version: choose clothing you can actually move in, and that makes sense for the location we’re photographing. For beach engagement photos, I usually love outfits with movement and texture. Flowy fabrics photograph beautifully in Maui’s breeze, and neutral or earthy colors tend to work really well with the ocean, sand, greenery, and volcanic landscapes.
But please don’t suddenly become a beige linen couple because Pinterest told you that’s what you’re supposed to wear in Hawaii.

If you love color, WEAR COLOR, or if you feel incredible dressed up, let’s dress up. If you’d rather be barefoot in something casual while running down the beach together, perfect. The goal isn’t to look like someone else’s engagement session. It’s to make choices that still feel like the two of you.
Yes, I can absolutely help you figure this out beforehand.

If you’re already planning a trip to Maui before your wedding, that’s an easy opportunity to schedule your session. For destination couples who aren’t making a separate planning trip, we can also talk about fitting your session into the days leading up to your wedding.
I just wouldn’t recommend squeezing it into an already chaotic day.
The whole point is to have time to relax together.
We’ll also choose timing based on the location, season, light, weather, and the overall feel you want for your photographs. Maui isn’t a one-size-fits-all backdrop, and part of my job is helping you figure out what makes the most sense for your session.
You don’t need to arrive knowing the perfect beach, exact time, and wind forecast. That’s my department.

I include engagement photos in Maui with my full-day wedding packages because they make the entire photography experience better. Yes, you walk away with another gallery full of photographs from an incredibly special season of your life.

But more importantly, we walk into your wedding day already knowing each other. You know that you don’t have to perform for me; you know I’ll guide you when you need it, and you know I’ll also leave you alone enough to actually experience what’s happening. That’s because I already know a little more about how the two of you love each other.
That’s important to me. I don’t want the first chapter of our relationship to begin while you’re standing there in your wedding clothes with a million emotions running through your head.

I’d much rather start barefoot on a Maui beach, laughing together while we figure out exactly how weird it feels to have someone photograph you kissing for the first time.
Then, when the wedding comes? We’re already friends, and you can forget about me and go get married.
If you’re dreaming of a wedding in Hawaii where you can actually be present instead of spending the whole day wondering what you should be doing for the camera, that’s exactly the kind of experience I want to create for you.
When you book full-day wedding photography with Shannon + Chris, your complimentary engagement session gives us the chance to connect before the wedding, create some ridiculously beautiful beach couple photos, and make sure that by the time your wedding day arrives, having us around already feels easy.

Your wedding isn’t a photoshoot. It’s your life happening in real time.
And the better we know each other beforehand, the more space I can give you to actually live it.
If you’re looking for a Maui wedding photographer who cares just as much about how your day feels as how it photographs, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up. Tell me all about your Maui wedding here, and let’s start planning an experience that feels like the two of you from the very beginning.
