You’re officially planning a rainy day wedding.  I swear, if I had a dollar for every weather screenshot I’ve gotten the week before a Maui wedding, I’d probably have enough to buy another camera. The message is almost always the same: “Shannon… is this bad?”

Sometimes the forecast does look a little dramatic. That was definitely the case for Maggie and Heath. An island-wide storm rolled through Maui on their wedding day. Rain was in the forecast from morning until night, and if you were watching the weather app, you probably would’ve assumed the entire day was doomed.

Spoiler alert… it wasn’t. In fact, it turned into one of the most emotional, joy-filled weddings I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing. Here’s what I’ve learned after years of being a Maui wedding photographer: the weather almost never determines how your wedding day feels. The two of you do.

Now, does that mean you’re not allowed to feel disappointed if rain shows up? Of course not. You’re human! It’s okay to have a moment where you think, “Well, this wasn’t exactly what I pictured.” But after photographing weddings through sunshine, passing showers, rainbows, windy beach days, and yes… the occasional tropical downpour, I can tell you this with complete confidence: some of the best wedding days I’ve ever witnessed didn’t happen because everything went according to plan. They happened because the couple chose each other over the plan.

Maui is full of little microclimates, which is just a fancy way of saying the weather can be completely different depending on where you are. It might be pouring rain on one side of the island while the other side is sunny enough for people to be wondering if they remembered sunscreen.

I’ve seen it happen more times than I can count. Even when rain does show up, it’s super quick. A passing shower rolls through, everyone ducks under cover for a few minutes, someone says, “Well… this is memorable,” everyone laughs, and before long you’re back outside wondering what all the panic was about.

Now, Maggie and Heath’s wedding wasn’t one of those quick little showers. An island-wide storm had came over Maui, and this wasn’t the kind of weather that was going to disappear in fifteen minutes. It would’ve been really easy to spend the entire morning focused on everything that wasn’t going according to plan.

Instead, they focused on each other. I truly believe that’s what made the day so unforgettable.

Not the timeline, whether your hair stayed perfect or whether cocktail hour happened exactly where you planned it. Just, “We’re here. We’re getting married. Look at all these people who showed up because they love us.”

Then let it go. Seriously.

Once you’ve prepared for the possibility of rain, there’s nothing left to do except enjoy the day that’s waiting for you. Whether the sun shines all afternoon or the clouds decide to make an appearance, you’re still marrying your favorite person.

That’s the part nobody can rain on.

When Is Rain Most Likely During a Maui Wedding?

Let’s talk about the question everyone eventually Googles. “What’s the rainiest time of year in Maui?” The very Shannon answer is, it depends. 😂 One of the funniest things about living here is watching people treat the weather man like he’s delivering absolute truth. Meanwhile, locals are looking out the window thinking, “Hmm… we’ll see.”

Maui has a personality of its own when it comes to weather.

Generally speaking, winter (roughly November through March) brings a higher chance of rain as the island moves through its wetter season. Spring usually starts drying out while still giving us those unbelievably green mountains everyone falls in love with, and summer tends to be drier overall.

But, and this is a BIG but, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a sunny January wedding or a rainy July wedding. That’s just island life. One of the reasons Maui is so insanely pretty is because the weather is constantly changing. A passing shower keeps everything lush and tropical, and thanks to the island’s microclimates, the weather can look completely different just a few miles down the road.

I’ve photographed weddings where it was raining during the ceremony and sunny by the time we started portraits. I’ve also watched a forecast call for rain all afternoon, only to end up with nothing but sunshine and a ridiculously gorgeous sunset.

Bless their hearts, weather apps try their best. Maui likes to keep them humble.  That’s why I always tell my couples not to spend the week before their wedding refreshing the forecast every twenty minutes. I know it’s tempting, I really do, but there’s a good chance the weather on your screen won’t look anything like the weather you actually get.
