I have a theory. I think couples spend WAY more time planning what their wedding is going to look like than they do imagining what it’s going to feel like. And honestly? I get it. When you’re planning weddings in Maui, you’re researching Maui wedding venues, comparing florals, trying to decide who to invite, and suddenly you’re twenty browser tabs deep, wondering if chair rentals somehow became your entire personality. (Wedding planning is weird like that.)
But then I photographed Hayley + Tyler’s wedding at White Orchid Beach House, and it kind of stopped me in my tracks for a second because nothing felt rushed. No one was checking the time or asking what was next. They had this beautiful little picnic set up by Maui Luxe Picnics, the ocean right there, and instead of bouncing from one thing to the next, they just… stayed. Talking. Laughing. Watching the light shift over the water.
At some point, shoes came off (because of course they did). Dinner stretched out in that slow, easy way it does when no one feels like they need to be anywhere else. I remember thinking, this is it. This is what people are hoping for when they picture weddings in Maui. Not a packed timeline or a checklist.
Just space to be there. Together. Moments where nothing is technically happening, but everything feels like it matters. I think that’s one of the best things about Maui. It just… slows you down without asking. Which is kind of impressive when you think about it. Most places make you feel like you should be doing more. Seeing more. Scheduling more.
Maui somehow does the opposite.

I think that’s why so many couples end up choosing Maui in the first place. Not just because it’s beautiful (although… obviously). It’s because weddings in Maui naturally feel different. You’re not squeezing a wedding into the middle of everyday life. You’re stepping away from it for a little while. The island gives people permission to slow down, be present, and focus on what they’re really here for in the first place.
So if you’re dreaming about weddings in Maui, let’s talk about how to plan a day that leaves room for that.
Here’s something I’ve noticed after photographing weddings here for years: the couples who have the most relaxed wedding days usually didn’t accidentally end up there. They planned for that feeling from the very beginning, not by creating a perfectly color-coded timeline (although if that’s your thing, absolutely go for it 😂), but by asking themselves different questions.
Instead of asking, “How many people should we invite?” they asked, “Who can we not imagine getting married without?” Instead of wondering, “What’s everyone else doing?” they focused on, “What sounds fun to us?” Those two conversations might not seem all that different, but trust me, they are. Once you know how you want your wedding to feel, the rest of the decisions start getting so much easier.

Not necessarily easier because there are fewer decisions. Trust me, there will still be decisions. 😂 But easier because you’re no longer trying to make choices based on what everyone else is doing.
Hayley + Tyler are such a good example of that. They didn’t try to fit every possible wedding tradition into one day just because that’s what weddings are “supposed” to look like. They built a day around what mattered to them: a beautiful ceremony at White Orchid Beach House, time to enjoy the property, an incredible private picnic by Maui Luxe Picnics, and plenty of space to slow down and experience each part of the day instead of rushing from one moment to the next.
That’s one of my favorite things about weddings in Maui. The island kind of sneaks up on you. One day, you’re researching timelines and transportation. The next you’re sitting outside after dinner, watching the sky change colors for the fifth time, and realizing absolutely nobody knows what time it is anymore.
That’s usually when people start having the most fun.
I think sometimes couples worry that if they aren’t packing every minute full of activities, they’ll somehow be missing out. I think the opposite is true. Some of the best moments happen when nothing was planned at all, the conversation after dinner that somehow lasts an extra hour, walking barefoot through the grass because your shoes have officially become optional, or standing together after everyone else has wandered inside because neither of you is quite ready for the day to be over.
You can’t schedule those moments, but you can leave enough room for them to happen. I think that’s one of the best decisions you can make when you’re planning a wedding in Maui.
Okay. Can we talk about this for a second? I think somewhere along the way, weddings started feeling like performances. There’s this quiet pressure that tells couples they need to invite everyone, make sure every guest is entertained every minute of the day, and somehow create an experience that makes 100 different people happy all at once. That’s…a lot. I don’t think that’s what most couples are dreaming about.

Part of what made Hayley + Tyler’s day feel so different was that they gave themselves permission to keep it intimate.
Instead of worrying about coordinating a huge guest list, they were able to slow down. They had real conversations and weren’t trying to make it around twenty tables before dinner ended. They got to eat their meal (which, trust me, doesn’t happen nearly as often as you’d think 😂).
I always joke that one of my unofficial goals as a Maui wedding photographer is to make sure my couples get to enjoy their cocktail hour and finish their dinner. It sounds simple. But it’s amazing how often those are the moments couples accidentally miss.
One thing a lot of people don’t realize when they’re planning weddings in Maui is that Hawaii doesn’t require witnesses for a legal marriage. If the two of you want to exchange vows on a beach with no guests, you absolutely can, or if you want to invite your parents, siblings, and a few of your closest friends, that’s perfect too.

If you’re still trying to decide between a larger wedding and something more intimate, I put together a guide to planning a micro wedding in Maui that walks through why so many couples are choosing smaller, more intentional celebrations.
There isn’t a “right” guest count. There’s only the one that feels like you. I think more couples would enjoy their wedding day if they gave themselves permission to make decisions like that. Not based on expectations, guilt, or what weddings are “supposed” to look like. Just based on what feels right.
That’s another reason I love White Orchid Beach House for intimate weddings. The property feels incredibly private without feeling isolated. You can gather everyone together for your ceremony overlooking the ocean, wander down to the beach for portraits, then come back for dinner without ever feeling like you’re rushing between locations. The entire day flows naturally because everything is right there.
If you’re curious about the property itself, I put together a complete guide to White Orchid Beach House that walks through the venue, what makes it unique, and why so many couples choose it for their Maui wedding.

That’s something couples often underestimate. Logistics shape the feeling of your wedding just as much as the decor does. When you aren’t loading everyone into cars, worrying about parking, or trying to stick to an impossibly tight schedule, something shifts. People settle in. Conversations last longer. Your grandma ends up telling stories you haven’t heard before. Someone inevitably goes back for another slice of cake. The kids are busy looking for geckos instead of asking when dinner is. (If you’ve spent any time in Hawaii, you know exactly what I’m talking about. 😂)
Those little moments aren’t distractions from your wedding day. They are your wedding day. I think that’s easy to forget when you’re in planning mode. Years from now, I have a feeling those are the memories you’ll come back to long before you remember what your napkins looked like.
I think venues do a lot more than give you a pretty place to get married. They shape the entire rhythm of your day. That’s one of the reasons I love White Orchid Beach House.
When couples first start looking at Maui wedding venues, it’s really easy to focus on things like ocean views, palm trees, and whether the ceremony space photographs well. (Spoiler alert: White Orchid absolutely checks all those boxes.) But after photographing weddings here, I’ve realized the biggest difference isn’t what the property looks like.

It’s how it lets people move through the day. Haylee + Tyler never had to pile everyone into cars to drive somewhere else for portraits. They didn’t have to rush through cocktail hour because sunset was twenty minutes away at another location. They weren’t watching the clock, wondering if they were behind schedule.
Everything was already there. A gorgeous oceanfront ceremony space. Lush tropical landscaping. Direct beach access just a short walk away. Beautiful little corners of the property that all photograph differently, so your gallery ends up feeling incredibly diverse without spending half your wedding day driving around the island.

As a Maui wedding photographer, I love that part. Because here’s the thing…Beautiful photos matter. Obviously. But not more than being present for your own wedding day. When we’re not spending half the day driving around the island chasing locations, you get more time for the stuff you’ll remember.
That’s one of those little things couples don’t always think about when choosing a venue, but it makes such a difference.
Less driving means more celebrating, less coordinating means more connecting, and less time watching the clock means more time watching the sunset. I think that’s exactly what Lisa and Will’s day was all about. They weren’t trying to squeeze every possible photo location into one afternoon. They chose a place where everyone could settle in, enjoy the view, share an incredible meal, and let the day unfold naturally.

Sometimes creating a relaxed wedding isn’t about doing less. It’s about choosing a place that asks less of you.
Here’s something I always encourage couples to think about. Don’t just plan your wedding. Plan your week. One of the biggest advantages of having weddings in Maui is that you’re already doing something most couples don’t get to do… you’re starting your marriage on vacation.
That’s really easy to overlook when you’re knee-deep in planning mode. Suddenly, you’re researching timelines, transportation, rental chairs, florals, hair, and makeup, and before you know it, you’ve planned an entire wedding but forgotten to plan any actual time to enjoy Maui.
Trust me on this one. Leave room for both.
Maybe that looks like arriving a few days early, so your first morning on the island isn’t spent running errands. Instead, you’re grabbing coffee, watching the waves, and letting your body realize, “Oh…we’re really here.” Maybe your guests spend the day before your wedding snorkeling at Molokini, exploring the Road to Hana, or wandering through the shops in Wailea. Maybe everyone meets for a casual welcome dinner where nobody’s dressed up yet, and the only agenda is eating good food and catching up.

Or maybe, and this is my personal favorite, you don’t plan much at all. Some of my favorite Maui memories have nothing to do with an itinerary. They’re stopping for shave ice because it sounded good. Watching sea turtles pop their little heads up while you’re sitting on the beach. Finding yourself talking for an hour after dinner because nobody’s in a hurry to leave.
That’s kind of Maui’s thing. The island is constantly convincing people to stay a little longer. One more beach, one more drink, one more sunset and one more conversation before heading back to the hotel.
Somehow, those are always the moments people end up talking about years later. Not the reservation they almost missed, the timeline, or the weather forecast they checked seventeen times before leaving home. Just the parts that felt like real life.

It gently reminds you that not everything needs to happen so fast. I think that’s one of the reasons destination weddings feel so different. You’re not trying to squeeze a wedding into the middle of everyday life. Every day life gets put on pause for a little while, and suddenly your wedding becomes part of this bigger experience you’ll remember as one incredible week.
Hayley + Tyler’s wedding felt like that. Their ceremony was obviously a huge part of the day, but it wasn’t the only part. They gave themselves space to enjoy the evening, linger over dinner, and simply be together.
I think that’s the sweet spot. The best Maui beach wedding isn’t necessarily the one with the longest timeline or the fanciest details. It’s the one where you leave the island feeling like you experienced it.
This is one of the questions I get asked the most as a Maui wedding photographer. “When’s the best time to get married?” I wish I could give you one perfect answer. But I can’t. Because Maui shows off in every season. It just does it a little differently.

Spring feels like Maui just woke up from a really good nap. Everything is green, the weather is gorgeous, and the beaches haven’t quite reached peak vacation chaos yet. The island feels fresh, relaxed, and somehow a little extra glowy this time of year.
Summer is exactly what most people picture when they imagine Hawaii. Long evenings, warm ocean water, golden light that seems to last forever…it’s gorgeous. It also happens to be when half the mainland collectively decides they also deserve a Maui vacation. 😂 So if you’re planning a summer wedding, booking vendors and accommodations early is definitely your friend.
Fall is wildly underrated. The weather is still incredible, the crowds ease up a little, and the entire island feels like it collectively took a deep breath after summer. If someone asked me to pick a secret favorite season, fall would be making a very strong case for itself.
Then there’s winter, which completely changes the island in the best way. Whale season brings this really cool energy to Maui. You’re taking portraits on the beach, everyone suddenly points toward the ocean, and sure enough… a whale is breaching offshore. It never gets old.
The truth is, I don’t think there’s a “best” season for weddings in Maui. I think there’s a best season for you. If you love warm evenings and don’t mind a little extra activity around the island, summer is amazing. Maybe quieter beaches sound like your dream; spring and fall are hard to beat. If seeing whales sounds like the cherry on top of an already incredible week, winter might be calling your name.

No matter when you come, Maui has this funny way of making people feel like they picked the perfect time anyway.
If you’ve made it this far, you’ve probably figured out I have some opinions. So here’s a handful of things I’ve learned after photographing weddings in Maui that I wish every couple knew before they started planning.
Not because you’ll probably run behind (although…sometimes you will). But because some of the best parts of the day happen when nobody’s looking at the clock.
This one is huge. Great vendors don’t just provide a service. They make the entire experience easier to live through. If every conversation leaves you feeling more stressed than when it started, they’re probably not your people.
One of the reasons I love venues like White Orchid Beach House is that the day naturally flows. Ceremony, portraits, dinner, celebration…everything happens without constantly loading into cars or watching the GPS. Less driving. More celebrating. I’ll take that trade every single time.

Please don’t spend your entire trip racing from activity to activity because you feel like you have to “see everything.” You won’t, and that’s okay. Maui will still be here. Go snorkeling if that sounds fun. Take the Road to Hana if you’ve always dreamed about it. Eat way too much shave ice. Watch at least one sunset without feeling like you need to photograph every second of it. Your wedding is part of your Maui experience. It doesn’t have to be the only part.
Not for the perfectly folded napkins. Not because your seating chart finally came together. You’re here because you found your person. Everything else is just the backdrop.
Nope! Hawaii doesn’t require witnesses for a legal marriage, which is one of the reasons intimate weddings and elopements work so beautifully here. Whether it’s just the two of you or a handful of your favorite people, your wedding can truly look however you want it to.
If you’re still figuring out the legal side of things, I put together a complete guide on how to get married in Hawaii that walks through the marriage license process, timelines, and everything you’ll need before your wedding day.
Absolutely. White Orchid Beach House is one of my favorite Maui wedding venues for intimate celebrations because everything is in one place. You have ocean views, tropical landscaping, beach access, and plenty of room to celebrate without ever feeling rushed from one location to another.
If you can, I’d recommend at least five to seven days. It gives you time to settle into island life before your wedding, enjoy the celebration afterward, and experience a little of what makes Maui so special without feeling like you’re constantly packing up for the next thing.

I’m definitely a little biased here. 😂
But I do think working with a local Maui wedding photographer makes a huge difference. Someone who knows the island can help with timelines, lighting, weather patterns, location ideas, vendor recommendations, and all the little behind-the-scenes details that make your day feel effortless.
Weddings in Maui tend to feel less rushed and more experience-focused. Instead of packing everything into a single day, many couples turn their wedding into a full island experience with welcome dinners, beach days, snorkeling adventures, and time spent with the people they love most. The result is often a wedding that feels more personal, relaxed, and connected.
If there’s one thing Hayley + Tyler’s wedding reminded me of, it’s this: Relaxed weddings don’t happen by accident. They’re created through dozens of little decisions that give you permission to slow down, be present, and enjoy the day you’ve spent so much time planning.
If that’s the kind of wedding you’re dreaming about, I’d absolutely love to help. The kind where you get to experience it. The kind where you’re not rushing from one thing to the next, and the kind where years later, you remember how it felt just as much as how it looked.

Because that’s the stuff that lasts. Not the perfectly timed timeline or whether every single detail went exactly according to plan. Just the feeling of looking around and realizing, “Yep. This was us.”
Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration at White Orchid Beach House, a barefoot Maui beach wedding, or exploring other incredible Maui wedding venues, I’m here to help with more than just photographs. From choosing the right location to building a timeline that leaves room to breathe, I’ll help you create a day that feels just as good as it looks.
If you’re looking for a Maui wedding photographer who believes your wedding should feel like one of the best days of your life, not one of the busiest, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up.
Let’s create something that feels completely, unapologetically like you.
