I’ve never photographed a surprise proposal where someone was acting completely normal. They always think they are. They’re not. 😂 They’re checking the ring box every thirty seconds to make sure it’s still there. Walking just a little too fast. Smiling for absolutely no reason. Answering questions with, “Yep!” and then immediately asking, “Wait…what did you say?” It’s one of those moments that reminds me why I love being a Maui proposal photographer.
Not because I’m laughing at them. Because I know what’s about to happen. In a few minutes, they’re going to ask one of the biggest questions of their life. And from that moment on, everything changes. That’s why I think people misunderstand what they’re really hiring when they book a Maui proposal photographer.
Yes, you’ll get beautiful photos. Yes, you’ll have the moment documented forever. But honestly? That’s only a small part of it. You’re hiring someone to preserve the only version of this story that will ever exist. The version where you’re not engaged yet, where one of you knows exactly what’s about to happen, and the other has absolutely no idea. The version where your phone isn’t buzzing with congratulations yet.

Your family doesn’t know yet. Your friends aren’t asking to see the ring, and your phone isn’t lighting up with congratulations every few seconds. For a little while, it’s just the two of you carrying around this huge, exciting secret together.
And that moment only exists once. That’s what makes proposal photography so special. It’s about preserving a chapter of your story that only lasts a few minutes but stays with you forever.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions about hiring a Maui proposal photographer is that I show up, hide behind a palm tree, take a few pictures, and disappear into the sunset like some sort of proposal ninja. (Although…that mental image is making me laugh.)

The reality is that by the time proposal day rolls around, we’ve usually spent weeks planning together. We’ve talked about locations, looked at maps, figured out where the crowds usually are and where they’ll be the lightest.
We’ve talked about whether sunrise or sunset fits your vision better and have come up with backup plans in case Maui decides to remind us who’s really in charge of the weather.
Some days I’m helping choose between beaches. Other times I’m recommending where to celebrate afterward, figuring out the best place to hide, or texting someone who’s pretending they have absolutely no idea what’s about to happen. It’s one of the most fun parts of my job!
One of the things I hear most often after a proposal is, “I don’t know how I would’ve pulled that off by myself.” That’s exactly the point. You weren’t supposed to.

Living and working on Maui means I get to see the island through fresh eyes over and over again. I know which locations stay quieter, where the sunset is especially beautiful, and the little logistical details that most visitors wouldn’t even think to ask about. Instead of spending weeks trying to become an honorary Maui local before your trip, you get someone who’s already done the homework.
The result? You spend less time stressing and a whole lot more time getting excited.
If you’re wondering whether hiring a Maui proposal photographer is really worth it, I’d encourage you to think beyond the photos themselves. You’re hiring someone who’s helping you plan the surprise, navigate the little details, and make sure you can stay fully present when the moment finally arrives.

If you’re still in the early planning stages, I also put together a complete guide on how to plan a surprise proposal in Hawaii that feels natural and easy. It walks through everything from choosing the right location to keeping the surprise a secret, so you can head into proposal day feeling confident instead of stressed.
I’ve noticed something after photographing a lot of proposals that makes me smile every single time. Almost every single person says the exact same thing afterward: “That happened so fast.”
And they’re right.

You spend weeks (sometimes months) thinking about this moment and rehearse what you’re going to say in the shower and check the ring box approximately 437 times. You wonder if they’re suspicious. Before you know it, you’re down on one knee, they’re saying yes, you’re hugging, you’re laughing, and before you know it, it’s over.
Adrenaline has a funny way of making time feel completely different. Everything happens in a blur, and later you’ll both start remembering little pieces the other person completely missed. One of you will say, “I didn’t even notice people were clapping,” while the other admits they forgot half the speech they’d practiced for weeks.

It’s why proposal photography feels so different from anything else I photograph. You get to experience the moment once, but you get to relive it together forever.
Sometimes my couples tell me their favorite photos aren’t even from the proposal itself. They’re the moments leading up to it. The nervous pacing. The deep breath before reaching into a pocket. The smile that was trying so hard to look casual. Those little moments become part of the story too, and honestly, I think they’re just as meaningful as hearing “yes.”
Can I tell you a little secret? My favorite photos almost never happen during the proposal. They happen afterward.
It’s the giant hug where neither of you wants to let go. It’s the moment they finally look down at the ring and immediately hold their hand out in every direction to see it sparkle. (This happens almost every time, and I love it!!) It’s laughing because you suddenly realize strangers have been quietly cheering for you from across the beach.

I almost always suggest rolling right into a little engagement session while you’re still soaking it all in. It’s one of the reasons couples love having the same person as both their Maui proposal photographer and Maui engagement photographer. Everything feels natural because we’re simply continuing the celebration instead of starting over.
If you’re wondering what those photos can look like, I also put together a guide to Hawaii engagement photos with outfit ideas, location inspiration, and tips for making your session feel relaxed and natural.
There’s something about those first twenty or thirty minutes that you simply can’t recreate later. Nobody’s worried about posing. Nobody’s wondering where to put their hands. You’re not thinking about the camera at all. You’re just walking around Maui with your favorite person, thinking, “We just got engaged.”

The smiles are real, and hugs are tighter. The excitement hasn’t settled yet.
Engagement sessions are always special, but these photos feel different because you’re documenting a version of yourselves that only exists for a little while. Before the phone starts buzzing with congratulations and before wedding planning begins. Before life speeds back up again.
That’s a version of your story you’ll never get back. Those are the photos worth remembering.
One of my favorite parts about photographing proposals happens long before I ever pick up my camera. It usually starts with a message that says something like, “Okay…I know I want to propose in Maui. I just have absolutely no idea where to start.”
First of all? Totally normal! LOL. If you’ve never been here before, how are you supposed to know which beaches get crowded, where the sunsets are best, or which locations feel private enough for one of the biggest moments of your life?
That’s where I come in.

When you hire me as your Maui proposal photographer, you’re not just getting someone to show up and document the moment. You’re getting someone who’s spent countless evenings chasing sunsets around Maui, knows which beaches stay quieter, how the light changes throughout the day, and where you’ll actually be able to enjoy the moment instead of feeling like you’re proposing in front of a hundred strangers.
Maybe you want somewhere quiet where it feels like the two of you have the whole beach to yourselves. Maybe you’re imagining dramatic lava rock cliffs, soft golden sand, or a luxury resort where you can celebrate with dinner afterward. Every Hawaii proposal looks a little different, and that’s exactly how it should be.
One of my favorite places for couples looking for a private, elevated proposal experience is White Orchid Beach House. If that sounds like your style, I’ve put together a complete guide to planning a proposal at White Orchid Beach House so you can see what makes it such a special spot.

Or maybe your only requirement is, “I just don’t want a hundred people watching.”
I completely understand that one. Here’s what I’ve learned: the “best” proposal location in Maui usually isn’t the most famous one. It’s the one that fits you.
I’ve had couples choose a hidden beach because they wanted something peaceful, and I’ve helped plan proposals outside beautiful resorts because that’s where they were staying all week. I’ve even had people tell me they cared way more about privacy than having the most Instagram-famous location on the island.
Those are usually the proposals that feel the most personal. Because when you stop asking, “Where does everyone else propose?” and start asking, “Where would this feel like us?” the answer gets a whole lot easier.

That’s where planning gets really fun for me.
Helping couples find a place that already feels like part of their story before the story even begins.
Here’s my unsolicited island bestie advice. Don’t make the proposal the only thing you planned that day. Seriously. You’ve already gone through all the effort of choosing the perfect location, picking out the ring, and somehow keeping the biggest secret of your relationship.
Let’s celebrate it. Book a dinner reservation somewhere you’ll still be talking about five years from now. Pack a picnic. Grab shave ice afterward. Wander into dinner with sandy feet because neither of you wanted to leave the beach yet. Don’t rush back to the hotel just because the proposal is over. Pop some champagne, take engagement photos while everything still feels brand new, and soak it all in.

That’s another reason I love proposal photography. As a Maui proposal photographer, I get to watch couples relive one of the biggest moments of their lives in a completely different way. You experience it once, but you get to relive it together forever.
Nobody’s checking a timeline. Nobody’s wondering where they’re supposed to be next. For the first time all day, there isn’t anything to do except enjoy being engaged. You get to soak it in. Some proposal sessions end with couples sitting on the beach watching the sunset, talking about wedding ideas that definitely weren’t on the agenda an hour earlier. Others head straight to dinner with windswept hair, sandy feet, and the biggest smiles you’ve ever seen.

Neither one is wrong. The proposal is the reason you came to Maui. But the rest of the day?
That’s the beginning of one of your favorite stories together.
Before I became a Maui proposal photographer, I probably would’ve guessed everyone’s favorite photo would be the one where they’re down on one knee. Don’t get me wrong…that one’s pretty great. But after delivering a lot of proposal galleries, I’ve noticed something. The photos couples end up talking about usually happen a minute or two later.

It’s the laugh because neither of you knows what to do next, and you’re looking at the ring for the fifteenth time in five minutes. (I promise you’re not fooling anyone.) It’s the hug that somehow lasts way longer than either of you realized, and walking down the beach talking about dinner, calling your families, and saying, “I can’t believe we’re engaged,” over and over again.
My favorite part of delivering galleries is watching couples notice moments they didn’t even realize happened. The deep breath before you reached into your pocket or the smile on your partner’s face before they turned around. The random couple fifty feet away is quietly cheering for you.
Those are the little moments you never realize are happening until you see them afterward. And those are usually the photos that end up framed in your house.
If I could give every person planning a proposal one piece of advice, it’d be this: Don’t put so much pressure on making it perfect that you forget to enjoy it. I’ve photographed proposals where the speech went exactly as planned. I’ve photographed proposals where somebody forgot every single word they’d rehearsed.

Both ended with the same answer. Nobody has ever emailed me afterward to say, “I wish I’d memorized my speech better.” They tell me how excited they were. How nervous they felt, but how fast it all happened, and how they still can’t believe they pulled it off.
That’s what you’ll remember. Not whether everything went exactly according to plan. Just the fact that you asked one of the biggest questions of your life, and they said yes.

Absolutely. Honestly, that’s half the fun! I’ll help you choose a location, decide between sunrise and sunset, figure out the timing, and make sure everything stays a surprise until it’s time to ask the question. You don’t have to become a Maui expert before you get here, that’s what I’m here for.
If you already know your travel dates, I’d recommend reaching out as soon as you can. Maui is a popular destination year-round, and proposal dates, especially around holidays and sunset hours, can book up quickly.
The biggest piece of advice? Wear something that feels like you. I usually recommend lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors that photographs beautifully without feeling overly formal. Most importantly, choose something you’ll be comfortable walking on the beach in; you’ll enjoy the experience so much more if you’re not worrying about your outfit the whole time.

Sunrise and sunset both create beautiful proposal experiences, but they feel completely different. Sunrise usually means quieter beaches and a slower start to the day, while sunset brings those warm golden colors that Maui is famous for. If you’re not sure which is right for you, I’ll help you choose based on the location, your travel plans, and the kind of experience you’re hoping to have.
I always recommend it! You’re already dressed up, you’re riding the excitement of just getting engaged, and those first twenty or thirty minutes afterward are filled with some of the most genuine moments you’ll ever experience together.
One of the best things about Maui is its microclimates. Sometimes one beach is getting a quick shower while another is sunny just a few miles away. I’ll keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your proposal, and we’ll have a backup plan if we need one.

Most proposal sessions last about an hour to an hour and a half. That gives us plenty of time to document the proposal itself, soak in the excitement afterward, and wander the beach for a relaxed engagement session while everything still feels brand new.
There isn’t one “best” place to propose in Maui, and that’s a good thing. Some couples love quiet beaches where it feels like they have the whole place to themselves, while others picture dramatic lava rock cliffs or a luxury resort where they can celebrate with dinner afterward. My job is to help you find the location that best fits your relationship, rather than simply choosing the most popular spot.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m guessing you’ve got a ring hidden somewhere…or you’re about to. 😂
This is one of my favorite things to photograph because no two proposals are ever the same. Every couple has their own story, their own nervous excitement, and their own version of what the perfect “yes” looks like.

When you book me as your Maui proposal photographer, you’re getting so much more than someone who shows up with a camera. I’ll help you choose a location that fits the kind of experience you’re dreaming about, figure out the timing, come up with a backup plan if Maui decides to throw us a little surprise weather, and make sure you can focus on the moment instead of all the moving pieces.

Then, after you’ve heard “yes,” we’ll slow things down. We’ll wander the beach, soak it all in, pop some champagne if that’s your style, and capture those first few minutes of being engaged while everything still feels brand new.
If you’re dreaming about a proposal that feels effortless, intentional, and completely true to your relationship, I’d love to be your Maui proposal photographer and help you pull it off.
