Getting married in Hawaii might just be one of the easiest and most magical ways to say “I do.” If you’ve been wondering how to get married in Hawaii, you’re in the right place. As a Hawaii wedding photographer and local, I would be thrilled to celebrate with you!! Whether eloping on a quiet beach or planning a small ceremony with loved ones, the legal side of tying the knot in paradise is refreshingly simple. Here’s everything you need to know to make it official.
The great news? Hawai’i makes it easy. You don’t need to be a U.S. citizen or even a resident of the state. As long as you follow the required steps via the State of Hawai’i – you’re golden! PS. I do help with this process as well!
You’ll start by filling out a quick online application through the Hawaii Department of Health. Once that’s done, you’ll receive a Locator ID. This little number is your golden ticket; you’ll need it when you meet with a licensed agent on the island.
There’s a small fee of $65 to apply, and it covers both the application and portal fees. Honestly, it’s a small price for getting to marry your best friend!
Both of you need to show up in person (together!) to meet with a marriage license agent once you’re on the island. Don’t worry, there are agents on every major island, including Maui. Just bring your valid photo IDs (a passport or driver’s license works perfectly), and your agent will issue your license right then and there.
One of the best parts? The license is valid immediately and stays good for 30 days. So whether you’re getting married that same evening or next week at sunset, you’re set.
Your wedding ceremony must be performed by an officiant who is licensed in the State of Hawaii. This is super important! Thankfully, most wedding professionals and elopement planners on the islands know all the ins and outs and can help connect you with someone amazing. And here’s a sweet bonus: Hawaii doesn’t require witnesses, so your elopement can be as intimate as you like.
Once you’ve said your “I dos,” your officiant will take care of filing the license with the state. You don’t need to worry about a thing. After that, you will receive the official license in the mail in 2-3 weeks, perfect for framing or filing, depending on your vibe.
Try to schedule your license appointment early in your trip, just in case your travel plans get shuffled around. If you’re dreaming of a beach or park ceremony, make sure your spot doesn’t require a separate permit (many do, especially on public lands). And most of all—breathe. This process is simple, I’m here to help, and the reward is beyond beautiful.
Getting married in Hawaii is more than just a legal process; it’s a dreamy, heartfelt experience that blends the romance of the islands with the joy of your love story.
