Some wedding days just hit different. And from the moment we arrived at Olowalu Plantation House, a Maui wedding venue that seriously knows how to set the tone, we could feel it in the air. That beautiful blend of joy, nerves, and the feeling that this is really happening. The kind of day where the ocean breeze feels extra soft, the light hangs a little longer, and the love is so big you can literally feel it radiating from the people gathered.

We were lucky enough to document Mr. and Mrs. Padilla’s full day, from getting ready in the plantation house to golden-hour portraits to dancing under the stars. And let me tell you, Olowalu showed off. This venue is hands-down one of my favorite Maui wedding spots, and it’s not just because it’s absolutely stunning (although it totally is!!). It’s one of the only places on the island where you can have a totally private, oceanfront wedding without the resort crowds or tourists walking through your moment.
So if you’re dreaming of a wedding that feels intimate, unforgettable, and deeply Maui, you’re gonna want to see this one!!

As a Maui wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings all over this beautiful island, and Olowalu Plantation House always hits that sweet spot between laid-back island glow and full-on wow factor. It’s not just another Maui wedding venue; it’s a place that feels like Hawai’i. Lush greenery, towering palms, the scent of salt in the air, and the sound of waves just a few steps away. It’s pure magic.
What makes Olowalu so special (and such a rare find!) is that it’s one of the only private wedding venues on Maui that sits right on the water. Most venues with ocean views are tied to resorts, which can mean sharing space with hotel guests or navigating preset packages that don’t feel like you. But here? You get the whole space to yourselves. No distractions. Just you, your people, and the island!

The historic plantation house gives you a beautiful getting-ready space with vintage charm, and the outdoor layout is super versatile, so whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a full guest list with a big party, it flows beautifully from ceremony to reception. And don’t even get me started on the light! Sunset at Olowalu is next-level. That soft, golden Maui glow lights up the palms and reflects off the water, and your photos? Straight-up dreamy.
This venue gives you the best of both worlds: oceanfront beauty and total privacy. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t just photograph well, it feels right.

There’s something so special about those quiet morning hours before the big “I do.” And at Olowalu, that energy starts the moment you step into the plantation house. With big windows, soft light, and the ocean humming just outside, it’s the perfect space to breathe, reflect, and soak in the moment before the celebration begins.

Our bride and groom got ready just a few rooms apart, surrounded by their favorite people. It was calm but buzzing, music playing, champagne popping, laughter echoing through the old house. The kind of morning where the nerves mix with excitement, and you start to realize today is the day! I live for those moments. The way someone’s hands shake just slightly as they button up their dress or fix their tie. The way friends sneak glances at the bride or groom and tear up, trying not to mess up their makeup.

Having the getting-ready space right there at the venue makes the whole day feel seamless. No rushing, no driving between locations, just pure, uninterrupted connection. I’m talking inside jokes between photos and being steps away from the beach. That kind of ease shows up in the spirit and in the photos.

From a storytelling perspective, I love being able to capture it all, from those slow, quiet morning moments to the wild dance floor at night. There’s no shuffle or stress, just one gorgeous flow from start to finish. And at Olowalu, that flow feels real, like the day unfolded exactly how it was meant to!

The ceremony space at Olowalu is unreal, in the best, most Maui way. You’re literally steps from the water, palms overhead, with the breeze moving through like it’s part of the guest list. There’s no noise, no distractions. Just the ocean, your people, and this super calm vibe that let’s everyone just be there.

Their ceremony was simple, full of heart, and honestly, kind of perfect. They didn’t overdo the decor because Olowalu already gives you the showstopper backdrop. The Pacific was shimmering behind them, the sun was dipping just enough to get that soft golden light, and the emotion was real. There were laughs, tears, and that electric feeling like something big and beautiful was happening.

Here’s what I love about the ceremony setup at Olowalu:

Everything’s on-site, so once you arrive, you’re good. No loading into cars, no coordinating guests from one place to another. You’re instantly on island time, with salty air, soft light, and that feeling like this day is exactly how it’s meant to be.

One of my favorite things about shooting at Olowalu is that you’re not locked into one ceremony setup. There’s so much flexibility here, and each spot brings a totally different experience depending on what you’re envisioning. Want wide open ocean views? Done. Prefer something shaded and a little more tucked in? Got you.

After the vows are said and the happy tears are wiped, we usually sneak off for some portraits, and this is when Olowalu really shows off. The light gets softer, the ocean feels even closer, and there’s just this calm that settles in. It’s that “we freaking did it” moment, and it’s always one of my favorite parts of the day.
We keep it chill, just the two of you, taking a minute to soak it all in. I’m not giving orders or dragging you away from your people for an hour. We walk, we laugh, I might yell about how good the light is (because, yeah, I get loud when it’s that good), and you get those real, relaxed photos where you actually look like you, but with that just-married look. The nerves are gone, the pressure’s off, and it’s all joy from here. I’ve seen couples go from “wait, what do we do with our hands?” to “oh my god, that’s us?” in minutes.

Then it’s time to party.
The great thing about this Maui wedding venue is that the whole layout just flows. No shuffling guests to different spaces. No awkward downtime. One second you’re cutting the cake, the next you’re dancing barefoot under string lights with your favorite humans. Whether you’ve got 20 people or 200, it never feels too big or too small. It just feels like your day!!

And from a Maui wedding photography and videography perspective? We’re capturing everything: those hilarious speeches, your aunt crying during your first dance, the quiet in-between moments you don’t even realize are happening. That’s what we’re here for. Not just the pretty stuff (though trust, there’s plenty of that), but the real stuff you’ll actually remember.

When couples ask if full-day coverage is worth it, my answer is almost always yes, but especially here. Olowalu isn’t the kind of place you want to rush through. There’s too much heart in the day, from the quiet getting-ready moments in the plantation house to the last hugs on the dance floor.

From getting ready in the plantation house to your ceremony right by the ocean, to portraits in golden light and a dance floor under the stars, it’s all happening here. And every part of that story deserves to be remembered.

Some of the best moments we capture? They happen in between the big stuff.

Full-day coverage lets us tell your story from beginning to end, the real, emotional, unfiltered version. Not just the highlights, but the whole story. Those are the galleries couples come back to again and again.
Whether you’re planning from across the ocean or you live right here on the island, Olowalu is one of those Maui wedding venues that works with you, but there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of it.
Here’s what I’ve learned from shooting here over the years:

Golden hour here delivers. The light’s soft, the ocean’s showing off, and everything (and everyone) looks their best. If that’s the vision you’re going for, plan your ceremony about 60–90 minutes before sunset. Earlier in the day works too, it’s just brighter, with less shade unless you’re under the banyan tree!
West Maui can heat up, especially midday. If you’re planning an earlier ceremony on the oceanfront lawn, think ahead with water, shade, and fans for your guests. If you want built-in cover, the banyan tree or garden areas are great shady options that are absolute stunners.
This Maui wedding venue gives you room to play, which is awesome, but it means you get to decide how the day moves. Work with your planner to figure out a layout that fits your style. I’ve seen couples do dinner on the lawn, then shift the party closer to the house to keep the late-night energy cozy and fun.

Olowalu is super flexible, which we love, but that also means more moving parts. A solid Maui planner will help everything run smoothly. They’ll know the best layout for your guest count, how the light moves throughout the day, and which vendors work this venue like pros. (Need recs? We’ve got you!)

Lahaina and Ka’anapali are the closest spots to stay, but with Lahaina still in recovery, double-check what’s open and respectful to book. Kihei and Wailea are also easy to reach and have tons of great hotels, Airbnbs, and a chill beach-town vibe.
This venue is such a unique spot, and with the right team around you, it’s honestly one of the most relaxed, beautiful, fun places you can get married on Maui.

Nope. This is a private, gated venue, not a public beach or resort lawn. That means no tourists in your photos, no hotel guests wandering through, and no one blasting music nearby. It’s just you, your people, and the ocean. When couples say they want a private oceanfront wedding in Maui, this is what they’re picturing, even if they don’t know it yet.

Up to 200, easily. I’ve seen everything from 20-person elopements to full-on 150+ guest bashes here, and the space adapts really well. If you’re keeping things small, it still feels intimate. And if you’re going big, it doesn’t feel cramped. Pro tip: leave room for a dance floor that doesn’t kill the mood, layout matters.
It totally depends on your vibe and the time of day. If you want ocean views and golden light, the front lawn at sunset is gorgeous! If you’re getting married earlier in the day or want a more grounded feel, the banyan tree is gorgeous and gives you some much-needed shade. The garden’s great if you want something quiet and tucked away. I can show you photo examples of each so you can really picture it.

Yes, and it’s one of the best parts. The plantation house has big windows, vintage charm, and enough space for both of you to get ready without running into each other (unless you want that moment). It keeps the day flowing, and you’re not losing time driving around or stressing about logistics.
Honestly? Yes. Olowalu is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of venue. You get to bring in your own team, which is amazing, but also means more decisions to make. A solid local planner will help you create a timeline that works with the light, design a layout that flows, and pull together a crew who actually knows the space. If you’re not sure who to hire, we’ve got a list of favorites.

This wedding was one of those days I’ll think about for a long time. Not because everything was “perfect” in some Pinterest way, but because it was theirs. The way they laughed through the wind, hugged every guest like family, and danced barefoot until the stars came out. That’s what it’s about.

And Olowalu gave them the space to do all of that without pressure. It’s not a wedding factory or a cookie-cutter setup. It’s a place where you can show up fully as yourselves, bring your vision to life, and feel the ocean at your back the whole way through.
