One of the most common questions I hear from couples planning their Maui wedding or elopement is: “Should we do a first look?” And honestly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But after photographing so many beautifully emotional first looks here on the island, I can say they can be incredibly special. Let’s talk about what a first look really is, what it adds to your day, and whether it’s the right fit for your wedding vision.

A first look is a private (or semi-private) moment where you and your partner see each other before the ceremony. It’s often filled with emotion, anticipation, and a few happy tears. I usually help set the scene—whether it’s under the palms, by the ocean, or tucked in a quiet garden path—and then step back with my camera to let the magic unfold naturally.

Here are some of the reasons couples say “yes” to a first look during their Maui elopement or wedding:
Seeing your person before the ceremony can be the most grounding thing in the world. It gives you a chance to breathe, laugh, hug, and shake off the nerves together before walking down the aisle.
Weddings can go by so fast. A first look lets you share more of the day side by side, which is especially meaningful for intimate weddings and elopements where you might want to maximize that time.

Maui’s light is pure magic. Doing a first look earlier in the day can help us capture that glow before the sun dips or before your ceremony begins. It also gives us flexibility in your photo timeline—especially if you want more relaxed couple portraits or to explore different parts of the island.
If you’re inviting friends and family, a first look allows us to get most of the couple and group photos done before the ceremony. That way, after you say “I do,” you can head straight to your celebration instead of sneaking off for pictures.
That said, some couples choose to wait for that magical aisle moment, and that’s beautiful too. If tradition is important to you, or if you love the idea of building anticipation until the ceremony, then skipping the first look might feel more true to your vision. The key is to follow your heart.

As your photographer, I’m here to support whatever you choose. I’ve seen first looks that felt like movie scenes—wind in the palms, waves crashing, one person turning around with awe in their eyes. I’ve also seen ceremonies where that first look happened down the aisle, and everyone (myself included!) had tears in their eyes.
If you’re on the fence, we can always build your timeline with flexibility. I’ll help you think through the lighting, logistics, and emotional tone of your day so it all flows naturally.

At the end of the day, Maui is all about intention. Whether you meet before the ceremony or lock eyes at the altar for the first time, your love will shine.
