Maui has my heart, and not just because I get to capture the most beautiful weddings and elopements here. It’s the place I call home, where the island literally embraces you the moment you step off the plane, the sunsets hit a little deeper, and every corner holds a bit of magic that is forever stamped in your memory. Whether you’re visiting for your wedding, honeymoon, or just a dreamy escape, I always love sharing the best things to do in Maui. If you’re searching for inspiration or curious about making the most of your time on the island, this list of the best things to do in Maui comes straight from me and my family’s list of favorites!
There’s truly nothing like watching the sun rise above the clouds at the summit of Haleakalā – or catching sunset and watching the stars take over the sky right before your eyes. It’s a drive full of switchbacks and turns, but I promise it’s worth it. Bundle up, it gets chilly up there! Around 30-40 degrees typically. And prepare to be moved by the beauty, peace and stillness. It’s a view you don’t want to miss!
Some of my favorite beaches in the world are right here in South Maui. Places like Makena Cove (Secret Beach), Big Beach, and Ulua Beach are my go-to’s for relaxing, swimming, swimming with the turtles, or just soaking up the sunshine. Bring a picnic, grab a good book, and forget about what time it is!
I know it’s famous, but the Road to Hana really does live up to the hype. I always recommend starting early and taking your time, stop at the fruit stands, support the local businesses, explore the hidden trails, and definitely take a dip under a waterfall at the state park where its legal. The road to Hana leads to a small little town that doesn’t have a whole lot honestly – but its not about the destination, its the adventure along the way!
Ho’okipa Beach Park is one of my favorite places to sit on the rooftop of my Jeep and watch the brave souls catch the waves – in the winter you may even get lucky enough to witness the world famous wave, Jaws! It’s also a great spot to see honu (Hawaiian sea turtles) sunbathing on the shore in the late afternoon, total Maui magic.
For a date night or special dinner, you can’t go wrong with any of these amazing Maui restaurants:
Each offers something special, and honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them!
No matter where I am on the island, after making dinner for the kiddos, or taking pictures of a beautiful family, I always make time to catch the sunset. Whether walking along the Wailea Beach Path or just sitting in the sand at Kamaole III beach, those golden moments as the sun dips into the ocean never get old.
Maui is so much more than a postcard-perfect destination; it’s full of moments that ground you, inspire you, and make you feel alive. If you’re planning your trip and want tips (or a photographer who knows all the best backdrops!), reach out. I’d love to help you experience the Maui I know and love.
