One of the families’ most prominent stressors when planning their Hawaii family photos is choosing their outfits. While this isn’t just for family photos but photos in general, outfit planning can be a lot of stress and work. As a Maui family photographer and planner of our family photos, I understand the feeling of trying to find the ‘perfect’ look for every family member. I’m here to make your outfit planning a bit easier. You don’t have to match outfits! Throughout the blog, I will share my tips and reasons why you don’t necessarily have to match perfectly while helping you feel confident that you’ll all look great.
Simply put, no. You don’t have to match outfits for your Hawaii family photos. Matching outfits can be stressful while planning and often make someone uncomfortable. Finding a piece of clothing that looks good on everyone can be challenging. Instead of trying to match entirely, look for ways to coordinate instead. As a Maui family photographer, I aim to capture organic and natural moments between your family in paradise. Allow yourselves to feel confident and beautiful in your outfits and enjoy yourselves. While you may be worried about the outcome of your session without matching outfits, I can assure you the moments captured will look be some you reflect on for years to come.
The biggest tip I like to share with families is to focus on coordinating a few main colors rather than matching them completely. Perhaps you’ve found a dress for yourself that you love. Consider having the rest of your family’s outfits coordinate with the color or print of your dress. All of your outfits will look stellar together and not be too matchy. Or, if you’re looking to let the beauty of Hawaii stand out, consider wearing coordinating solid colors to enhance the scenery behind you. Timeless coordinating colors I suggest are neutrals, olive, and cream, or blue and cream. It’s a great way to create a timeless family photo while being unique to the person and complimentary to different genders and body types.
While it may seem a little controversial, I always enjoy a floral or patterned piece. During your Hawaii family photos, you may worry that a patterned or floral-covered item may be too much for pictures or hard to match. My motto is, so long as it isn’t too overpowering and a subtle print, go for it! Often, a printed item of clothing can make for easier coordination for the rest of the family. As always, try to avoid prints with loud colors or more than one person wearing a patterned item, as it can be too much for the camera and distract from the natural beauty found in Hawaii.
If you find yourself lost on a color scheme for your family, stick to the classics, neutrals, and earth tones. Not only will these colors always be easy to find while shopping, but they’re timeless. Neutrals are a great way to play into the sandy beaches’ beauty and enhance the stunning ocean’s natural tones. Earth tones are another great option to coordinate with the scenery but stand out in an organic and natural way. A few of my favorite affordable suggestions for finding family outfits are H&M, Old Navy, and A+F. They will have staple pieces and colors year-round, allowing for the perfect Hawaii family photo outfits.
